About the Author
James R. Evans is professor in the Department of Operations, Business Analytics, and Information Systems in the Lindner College of Business at the University of Cincinnati. His service includes president of the Decision Sciences Institute 1997-1998 and 11 years on the Board of Examiners and Panel of Judges for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. He has been Editor of the Quality Management Journal, published by the American Society for Quality, and served on editorial boards of numerous other journals. Dr. Evans has published more than 90 refereed papers and more than 30 editions of books. During the annual Quality Congress in May 2004, The American Society for Quality presented Dr. Evans and co-author Bill Lindsay with the Philip B. Crosby Medal for writing THE MANAGEMENT AND CONTROL OF QUALITY, 6E. The Crosby medal was presented "for authoring a distinguished book contributing significantly to the extension of the philosophy and application of the principles, methods, and techniques of quality management."

William M. Lindsay is Professor Emeritus of Management at Northern Kentucky University. He received a BSIE from the Georgia Institute of Technology, MS in Engineering from the University of Cincinnati, and an MBA and Ph.D. from Georgia State University. In addition to coauthoring eight editions of MANAGING FOR QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE EXCELLENCE (including predecessors), he is the coauthor of Total Quality and Organization Development. He served as an examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award for four years, as a judge for the Kentucky Quality Award for five years, and as a judge for the Seasongood Innovation Awards for the City of Cincinnati for three years. He is a senior member and past President of the Cincinnati Chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers, past President of the Cincinnati Chapter of the Association for Quality and Participation, and is a member of the American Society for Quality (ASQ), in addition to other professional organizations. He continues to teach MBA courses in quality management and project management. He is currently a Board Member of CLASP, a local nonprofit after-school program for elementary-aged children, and is an active volunteer at his church.

A Great Textbook--Thumbs up!

After reading this book, and studying the various applications used in the study of statistical analysis of quality control; it has facilitated my understanding of the subject beyond my horizon. I highly recommend this textbook for students as well as those who value the importance in the management of quality control.

This is a compilation of five previous books on drawing cats, dogs, wild animals, birds and horses, not a brand new book. If you don't have these previous titles you can now obtain them in one handy volume with nothing omitted. Each page (larger than UK size A4) shows you how to draw an animal or bird, starting with a rough outline and adding more in subsequent diagrams (usually six). The last two show the drawing shaded in pencil and finally with paint added for a colored study. One helpful aspect of this is that each additional drawing shows what has been added to it in a different colored pencil, although in some cases more stages would have made the book even more user-friendly. For a beginner it is not always obvious how to get from a simple line drawing to the fully shaded study next in line, but working it all out is perhaps part of the fun. Certainly this is a beautifully simple approach to drawing, where there are no captions - they frankly just aren't necessary - just steps to work through. And of course use the individual portraits to bring some life into other paintings. Practice ... Practice ... Practice !!

I've been a avid artist most of my Life since I could first hold a pencil. I am also an Big Animal lover so animals have always been my main subject in artwork. But I struggled with getting them in their natural form like the different poses of cats, dogs, horses, etc. This book helped tremendously in helping me get those natural poses down. It was very simple to follow and my only gripe was I wish it contained more animals than just the basic Cat, Dog, Horse, Bird, etc. But with this book alone you can explore further without it once you've mastered techniques within. Just remember Practice !

Fun for little artists

I bought this for my grandchildren (ages 9 and 12) who were visiting this summer. How wonderful to find something they liked to do that was not electronic! I am not an artist, but I think that the way this book approaches drawing - gradually expanding the detail on a few underlying shapes - actually helps kids see differently. Sophisticated art that distills reality into basic shapes may even make more sense, if they learn to draw starting with those shapes. A great rainy day book!

GREAT HELP FROM START TO FINISH

I am very pleased with the book, it does what I wanted, a step by step guide to drawing. I have been getting my grandchildren involved in Art as I have started to draw now that I have retired. I find this type of instruction teaches you to really look at the subject you are trying to draw, and you can end up with something which resembles the animal. A nice articulate book for all ages.

Dr. C. Terry Warner holds a Ph.D. from Yale University and is a professor of philosophy at Brigham Young University. He has been a visiting senior member of Linacre College, Oxford University, and in 1979 founded The Arbinger Institute, a widely respected group that devotes itself to helping organizations, families, and individuals. he and his wife, Susan, have ten children.

Surprise Recommendations

I walked into a bookstore with a collegue looking for a book on parenting. Being the parent of two current teens and two eventual teens, I am always seeking to understand them and finding ways to be a better parent. However when I told my collegue what I was looking for he recommended "Bonds That Make Us Free" and when I asked the young clerk if they carried the book, she said she read it herself and that it helped her strengthen her friendships.

I was thoroughly pleased with the book. The most powerful concept I learned was about self-deception, and how it can define who we are and the decisions we make. The book is filled with many, many short examples to help understand the principles being taught which I found extremely helpful.

This is not a simple feel-good book. I loaned the book to an older friend of mine and she had a hard time understanding it all. I read a few of the stories to my wife and she had a hard time appreciating the significance of the principles through my explanations. You have to be committed to reading and understanding the book to get everything out of it. Mind you, these are not faults with the book -- like any significant breakthrough in understanding it requires work on the reader's part to think about the principles being taught and honestly assessing your own behavior, and then applying the principles to your life.

For anyone seriously interested in improving their own personal happiness I highly recommend this book. It's one of the bst self-help books I've ever read.

Intriguing, and at times radical, approach to life

This is truly a self-help book unlike any other. Its basic premise is that the root of many of our problems is a type of self-deception. Because of dishonesty toward ourselves, we are dishonest toward others (often without realizing it) and are unable to change in a positive way.
Celebrity psychologist Phil McGraw often points out that when two people are in a relationship, they tend to reinforce the other's negative habits, and that people often receive a payback (often unconsciously) from both their negative behavior and the negative behavior of the person. Warner explains such a process in detail in what is an especially fascinating part of the book.
In many ways, this book is quite radical. It suggests that the way to find oneself is to connect with other people in an honest way. It also says that when there is a dysfunctional relationship, to find healing we need to admit where we were wrong -- no matter how wrong the other person was! Warner provides some case studies that at first glance seem shocking -- why should the abuse VICTIM be the one to apologize? Yet on further reflection, the anecdotes he gave made sense. Some of the steps that seemed to radical and/or counterintuitive worked only because the person took the action with the right attitude; Warner goes to great pains to point out that the same action might not be appropriate for someone else to take for different reasons.
I have two major (and related) criticisms to this book:
-- Warner does not adequately explain when (or if) it is appropriate for a person to act in his or her own interests when such an action might be detrimental (or seem that way) to another person. At one point Warner even criticizes self-assertion, although it's not clear exactly what type of self-assertion he is critical of. Surely Warner would agree that we need to set boundaries for ourselves, although he would probably agree that many people set boundaries for the wrong reasons (it's that self-deception thing again). This is an area that needs more explanation in Warner's paradigm.
-- I think it might be easy for some especially vulnerable people to misread this book. Although this isn't Warner's intent, a person who is a doormat might understand this book as saying that it's OK to let another person step all over you. While certainly we should be forgiving of other people, it is also possible (and I don't think Warner would disagree) to extend "cheap grace" to other people, but I'm not sure Warner does a good job of explaining the difference.
Despite these criticisms, I found Warner's book to be one of the most thought-provoking ones I have read in a long time. I'd highly recommend it for anyone who wants an intriguing and meaningful perspective on the human condition.

Am I in the wrong?

Perhaps the most compelling question Warner asks us to take up in this book is: Am I in the wrong? In a world where war comes before political leaders admit their own faults and where 50% of marriages end in divorce, often because partners can only see the problems with their spouse this question could have powerful effects.
I believe Warner has chosen his title carefully using the word "free," which is so loaded today. Being "free" today has been confused with being able to choose between 10 brands of VCR or do whatever you want with no thought of the consequences. What Warner advocates is a real freedom, freedom from your human self and its weaknesses. Warner's book will not ensure you won't make bad decisions but it will teach you about the courage to admit when you are in wrong and how to change for the better. That is real freedom.

I only wish I had read this book sooner. I am not even finished with it but I am reviewing it. It is excellent. Written in a style very accessible for clinicians and VERY practical. I would say it's a must if you are a speech pathologist or audiologist working with kids and their families, especially if you deliver and counsel initial diagnosis.

I have not been to keen on m/f/m books, but this author is one that I love to read. So I gave it a chance and WOW. I LOVED it. Read any of her books and you will understand how she writes. Yes I would read another books like this one . As long as it's Sam Crescent writing it.

I'm kinda on the fence with this book. I can't seem to make up my mind wither I liked it or it was just ok, yet I want to read the next book. So I think if I could have I would have given it a 3.5 stars. The mens charters I really enjoyed. Tessie on the other hand I'm just not sure I liked her. she at times seemed like a spoiled brat and a selfish person also. And some of the talking during the sex scenes just seemed odd. The ending was a little odd as well. It leaves it open for another book about these three main charters or a book or two for some of the sub charters to star in their own books like most first books do, yet I have read the blurb for book two and it stars three people not even mentioned in this book.

THE best book I've have ever read for the novice.

An absolutely wonderful book full of useful information. The author has put together an easily read text with practical advice. Not confusing like most feng shui books. It is THE best beginner's book on this subject that I have found. Once you have assimilated the basics, then you can go on to the more detailed tomes.

A Wonderful Overview of Geomancy and the Art of Placement

This was the first Feng Shui book that I read, and it was an excellent place to start. The author explains the subject concisely but thoroughly and gives one enough knowledge to begin clearing one's home or office. Just a few changes of placment in my home, and my life improved dramatically. Coincidence? Could be...but I don't care! :) I recommend this book.

This book was ok as an introduction to Feng Shui, but it really leaves couples that don't share compatible birth stars hanging. I highly recommend Feng Shui Step by Step by T. Raphael Simons for a much more in depth book that is also more helpful for couples and families.

About the Author

Scott Empson is the chair of the Bachelor of Applied Information Systems Technology degree program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where he has taught Cisco routing, switching, network design, and leadership courses in a variety of different programs (certificate, diploma, and applied degree) at the postsecondary level. Scott is also the program coordinator of the Cisco Networking Academy Program at NAIT, an Area Support Centre for the province of Alberta. He has a master of education degree along with three undergraduate degrees: a bachelor of arts, with a major in English; a bachelor of education, again with a major in English/language arts; and a bachelor of applied information systems technology, with a major in network management. He currently holds several industry certifications, including CCNP, CCDP, CEH and Network+. Before instructing at NAIT, he was a junior/senior high school English/language arts/computer science teacher at different schools throughout northern Alberta. Scott lives in Edmonton, Alberta, with his wife, Trina, and two children, Zachariah and Shaelyn.

Most helpful book I've purchased for Cisco.

Extremely helpful for myself and others in class just starting off in Cisco.

If its only a recommended book for your Cisco class ignore the need to save money and pick this up.

Only gripe is that it baby steps you in the beginning of every chapter. Then again we all have those days where we completely draw blanks.

It summarizes every networking subject I have studied the entire time I've been in college into this 340 page book. Best Summary of Modern Research

During the 70's and 80's, a flood of new information on historical witchcraft became available. Levack's book is the best survey of this new data, which has revolutionized our understanding of the Great Hunt. It's not a very "daring" book; it sticks to the facts, to the things we're sure about. There isn't a lot of speculation in it. But it's a great antidote to the badly researched books, like Anne Barstow's _Witchcraze_, which flood the popular market.

Evidence based and thoughtful for a mainstream book on the topic

Finally, a scholarly treatment of the issue unimpeded by an emotional attachment to the forgery Etienne Leon de Lamothe-Langon's Histoire de l'Inquisition en France, written in 1829 (even though the forgery was uncovered in 1975)or any strong desire to hammer a square peg into a round hole to promulgate a writer's own personal crusade.

The result is an evidence based and thoughtful historical treatment of the Witch Hunting tragedy with reasonable conclusions.

If you are sick of unrealistic oversimplifications that reflect the pet interest/s of the author more than the historical evidence or sick of books where the author has not taken the time to keep 'up to date' with historical developments (35 years ago) and believes that the Witch Hunt is a purely medieval phenomenon rather than peaking between 1550 and 1650 this is the book to read.

Given the strengths of the book I would recommend it to anyone from budding historians to general public with an interest in a historically accurate take on the Witch Hunts. I acknowledge that Catholics might find slight discomfort in the author's apparent prejudice against Catholicism. He writes of reformation greats being Luther and Calvin and seems to downplay their contribution by contextualising that they didn't make much direct comment on the topic even though one of them insisted that witches need to be killed or something and they were highly influential. That is not to say that he fails to acknowledge that they contributed just a slight reluctance to give their contribution as much weight as someone who doesn't consider reformists to be great might. This is a very subtle issue that does not significantly detract from this first rate book.

Informative, but rather repetitive and dry

Pulling together the vast amount of information that Levack does had to be a truly daunting task. He does it well, with easily followed organization and summaries, tables and charts, and copious references to specific witch-hunt episodes. This all makes it a good reference for people who might want to know more about the social and religious settings of the hunts. (I'm reading it for a graduate literature class on mythology and heresy.)
However, he refers to specific hunts as if expecting readers to know a good deal about their causes, effects and events. Except for the Salem, MA, hunt (which is frequently referenced, though technically not in Europe at all), none of the many hunts were at all familiar to me. What, for instance, WAS the 1610-1611 "dream epidemic" in Basque country? It sounds fascinating, but Levack never gives us any details about it. Perhaps this sort of information is beyond the scope of Levack's interest, but its omission does make for dry reading of numbers and dates, as opposed to the more human stories that lie behind them.
