Grade 5-8–Noah and his sister, Abbey, are more understanding of their volatile dad's latest arrest than their mother, who begins talking of divorce. Dad sank the Coral Queen, a casino boat on a Florida Key because, he alleges, its owner, Dusty Muleman, has been illegally dumping raw sewage into the local waters. Soon enough the kids begin trying to gather proof that will vindicate their father and put the casino out of business. The colorful cast includes a drunken lout named Lice who disappears before he can be persuaded to testify against Dusty, his former boss. His rough-around-the-edges girlfriend, Shelly, comes through, though, helping the siblings dump dye in the boat's holding tanks, which finally brings the matter to court. Dusty's son, Jasper, is a chip off the old block, threatening and beating Noah on several occasions until he and, later, Abbey are rescued by a mysterious stranger who turns out to be their grandfather, long ago thought to have died in South America, probably while involved in drug smuggling. As the tale ends, he's back to Colombia to settle old scores. The plot would practically disappear if any one of the major characters had a cell phone, but the environmental story is front and center and readers will be hooked as the good guys try to do the right thing. Hiaasen's second novel exhibits some of the same elements found in his 2003 Newbery Honor Book: Florida local color, oddball adults (buxom and brawny), and a delightful quirkiness.But the sparkle that catapulted Hootinto the limelight isn't quite as brilliant here. Even so, there's plenty to like in this yarn, which, once again, drops an environmental issue into the lap of a kid. Righteous indignation, usually resulting from some sabotage of Florida's natural resources, has gotten Noah Underwood's dad in trouble before. This time, however, Dad's gone too far: he sunk a floating casino. Why? Its owner is dumping human waste in the water. Unfortunately, Dad can't prove it, and that's where Noah and his younger sister, Abbey, come in. The amateur sleuthing puts the sibs into some mildly suspenseful, occasionally amusing, situations, which, as in the previous book, share space with run-ins with a local bully (Noah takes some lumps but gets sweet revenge). An old-fashioned deus ex machina interrupts an otherwise believable setup, but Hiaasen still succeeds at relating an entertaining story while getting across a serious message about conservation and the results of just plain greed. This is a kid's book- and as an adult I LOVED it. I am a Carl Hiaasen fan, and love that a book like this can also inspire kids toward environmental awareness and possibly activism. I initially thought the concept was a bit far fetched - a gambling boat operation flushing raw sewage into the river upon which it sat. Who dies that in 2015? Hasn't this sort of low life crime been eliminated? Apparently not, and I was shocked to read a real wolrd case 2 weeks after finishing the book. The Anchorage Daily News had an article about a floating strip club off Kodiak island in Alaska piping raw sewage from the "Wild Alaskan" directly into the harbor and lying to the Coast Guard abDarren Byler, general manager of Alaska Leader Tours and owner of the floating strip club Wild Alaskan on, Dec. 1, 2104. Byler and his wife are accused of piping waste from bathrooms on the Wild Alaskan directly into the Kodiak harbor, then lying about it to investigators with the U.S. Coast Guard. out it. This was the EXACT same scenario in this children's book!
The more I read Hiaasen, the more I realize that many elements of his plots, although containing exaggerated characters for entertainment, seem to be based upon plausible scenarios.

Florida Keys and environmental suspense

From the first page Hiassen whets your appetite with suspense. Will the uncaring bullies running a polluting boat and their bullying kids win? Is there any justice for whistleblowers? Characters who have near fatal flaws who pull through difficult circumstances, and surprise with their resilience and character. Millennial kids meet burnt out opportunists, making for a battle between who see and live with the beauty of marine and aviary life, and those who would sell it all for a fast buck and a quick k drink to null the pain of moral vicissitudes. That kids keep us cheering and a beautiful ocean and bay inspire every page. Sheer enjoyment.

A Gift for my Granddaughter

My granddaughter hates to read, but her school participates in a required reading program. For the last four years she has read with me by phone long distance so she will actually read the books and pass the quizzes. We started with the Magic Tree House Series and I moved her gradually into more mature reading over the years. As an ex-school librarian I have read many children's books and found she enjoyed my suggestions...if not in the first few chapters, definitely by the end of the books. I began with classics, Newbery Winners and Honor books and books by the authors of the winners. To me they had proved themselves. So last year we read Hoot, and she loved it. We moved to Scat, Chomp and finally Flush. Mr. Hiaasen has a grasp on what makes children laugh. SHE liked this one very much. I unfortunately find they all become basically the same template... same theme, same locations, different characters. I cannot blame him; it worked for Michener. And the books are still better written than many books in the children's sections these days. I would definitely recommend it for children who need fun in their reading to make them read. I bought the hardcover because she likes to keep all her favorites and lend them to her friends.(I bought two copies...she has the hardcover; I read along from my Kindle!)

In 2007, I began setting Web sites showing designs by Taiwanese artist Deng Cheng-hong for self-sufficient Arctic communities. "At six going on eight billion people,” Lovelock told the New York Times in an interview in 2006, “the idea of any further development is almost obscene. We’ve got to learn how to retreat from the world that we’re in. Planning a good retreat is always a good measure of generalship.” The retreat, Lovelock insisted, even then, would be toward the poles. Enter the concept of "polar cities" for survivors of global warming and climate chaos in some far distant future, at least 30 generations from now, if not more.

Of course, it sounds like a dubious scenario, But there is already an intensifying push to develop Arctic resources and test shipping routes that could soon become practical should the floating sea ice in the Arctic routinely vanish in future summers.

Sensing this shift, the U.S. Coast Guard has already proposed establishing its first permanent Arctic presence, a helicopter station in Barrow, Alaska, the northernmost town in the United States. It’s not a stretch to think of Barrow as a hub for expanding commercial fishing and trade through the Bering Strait. The strategic significance of an ''opening Arctic'' recently was described in an article by Scott Borgerson, a former Coast Guard officer who is now a scholar at the Council on Foreign Relations. "It is no longer a matter of if, but when, the Arctic Ocean will open to regular marine transportation and exploration of its lucrative natural-resource deposits," he wrote. While he didn't mention polar cities per se, it's not a stretch to imagine where they will first be situated. Mr. Malone's book is paving the way humans will see the future -- and polar life. As humans are driven to Arctic shores by climate calamity at lower latitudes over the next thousand years -- perhaps sooner! --it’s a sure bet that the far north will be an ever busier place. I read this in paperback and loved it: a preppers manual for the future

This nonficiton history book looks into the future with dread but also with hope, and I think that more than anything else, it reads like an American Preppers Manual of How to Build and Live in a Polar City. Of course, these things won't be real for another 100 to 400 years, but it's good to think about it all and to prepare. Mr Malone has done his homework and if the CIA and FBI and Homeland Security agency is not reading this "manual" now, they should read it soon. It's that important to the the future of the Lower 48!

Earth's Possible Future

Polar City Dreaming is a unique look at Earth's possible future. It's an interesting twist on the powerful effects unchecked global warming could have on our fragile environment. The writer switches from the narrative of a futuristic teenage girl's diary to modern day science. I liked the way he kept his diary entries in the voice of a girl born and raised in a hostile environment without the benefit of a formal education yet aware of her surroundings. There are a number of graphic illustrations that help accentuate the writer's logic and shows his incredible imagination and forethought. Polar City Dreaming is a worthy effort on a timely subject. Buy it. Read it. Judge for yourself.

A very thorough look at Polar City engineering with short fiction interludes

[[VIDEOID:mo2HAUX7XSQFJ5R]]This book made me think about a book I've read about but never been able to read, in fact I forget the title and the author, but more on that at the end of my review. Polar city contains two books in one. The first is a fictional series of excerpts from a diary about life in a Polar City some several hundred years from now, written by a girl named Anlith. Interpolating this is an analysis of the types of technologies, and their current state of engineering, that humanity may need in a polar city some estimated 500 years from now. Thankfully, in Taiwan an other places people are actually concerning themselves with how we will live 500 years from now. This part is dry in places, though it is very thorough. Author Stephan Malone dissects each type of technology, and how it is engineered and built today (with some exploration of expected improvements), and puts the best pieces in place in his imagined Polar City.

Now even if you believe the climate will be exactly the same 500 years from now, exploration of the polar regions and development of resources are taking place today, with routes and the technologies to navigate them being explored, and technologies to haul resources from the polar regions being developed. Inevitably, cities will develop in those regions. And the exploration and mapping taking place today echoes the mapping of trade routes hundreds of years ago.

Which brings me to the thing I can't remember. One time while exploring documents on Archive dot org I came across a reference to a book, the most interesting book I've never read. It was written by a government clerk in Britain shortly after the American revolution and set out the next hundred years almost perfectly. This clerk envisioned cities organized by numbered communities with vehicles that traveled by cable, a mail system, an almost perfect exploration of developments of the nineteenth century, including an expectation of a great war in Europe early in the 20th Century because of over development of weaponry. It put the year of the war at 1908. The book, from the reference I read, was organized almost exactly like Stephan Malone's Polar City, one part being a letter from the future, the other being an analysis of developments. The book is very rare. At the time I found the reference I looked it up in library searches and only found it in three university collections, all of which were restricted. Anyway, I talk about that book because I felt like I was reading the same thing when I was reading Polar City.

About the Author

Peter Albersheim is Emeritus Director of the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center at the University of Georgia. He received his PhD from the California Institute of Technology. He and Dr. Alan Darvill founded the CCRC in September 1985.

Alan Darvill is Director of the CCRC at the University of Georgia, Director of the Department of Energy (DOE)-funded Center for Plant and Microbial Complex Carbohydrates, and is UGA Lead in the DOE-funded BioEnergy Science Center. He received his PhD from the University College of Wales.

Keith Roberts is Emeritus Fellow at the John Innes Centre, Norwich. He received his PhD from the University of Cambridge.

Ron Sederoff is Professor of Forestry and Co-Director of the Forest Biotechnology Group at North Carolina State University. He received his PhD from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Andrew Staehelin is Emeritus Professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He received his PhD from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology.

Excellent text, great diagrams and photos

If you have any interest in plant biology this is a worthwhile book. There are many beautiful electron micrograph images that really illuminate the text. There are also some very good diagrams.

Too often I see lightly-edited books written by an uncoordinated group of authors whose chapters vary wildly in quality, sold for high prices. This is not that sort of book, its wonderfully coherent and the price is reasonable considering the contents.

This book combines an up-to-date scientific review approach (like reading a set of Current Opinions articles each with citations for the major ideas discussed) with a beautifully diagrammed textbook layout and clear writing that a lay-person can understand. The novice and the expert will find something interesting on almost every page.

Ohio Photographer Captures the Beauty of Ohio in Stunning B&W Images

I have been partial witness to Tom's photographic work over the last few years catching an image here and an image there. His work has always been of the highest artistic and technical value and when I would see that he had posted a photo on-line I wouldn't hesitate to search it out and then once again admire his work. Now you can see 55 examples of his work all in one place representing his love of nature and Ohio. This book is printed completely in black & white providing a focus on the image, it's sharpness or intended softness, and the story of the image. I am sure that you will also enjoy the images and perhaps even want to seek out the places for yourself which he conveniently locates in a summary in the back of the book. I have personally selected one of his images for framing and hanging in my home.

About the Author
Jill Englebright Fox is a professor of early childhood education and the Director of Assessment at the University of Houston-�Victoria. After teaching kindergarten and first grade in the Texas public schools for eight years, she received her Ph.D. in Early Childhood Education from the University of North Texas. She continues to be active in early childhood classrooms as a volunteer, a professional consultant, a researcher, and a teacher educator.

Robert Schirrmacher was an instructor with the San Jose/Evergreen Community College District. He received his Ph.D. in Early Childhood Education from the University of Illinois. His experience includes teaching preschool, kindergarten, and first grade as well as teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. He has assisted in Montessori schools and directed programs for young children. Dr. Schirrmacher has served as a consultant to parent groups and public and private early childhood programs. As an advocate for developmentally appropriate education and quality care for young children, he has been involved in professional organizations at the local, state, and national levels.

The book came on time. It met my expectations and did not break my pocket. I love the idea of renting the book as I may never use it again. This was my first time, I think I might try renting again.

Nothing against this textbook but...

Tricked into buying this textbook when it clearly states that I can get a free seven day trial. When I clicked buy this item only once to see if it would add the option for the trial, it quickly made me pay without even a second confirmation. That's 130 dollars down the drain because Amazon tricked me. I am a prime member and I'm writing Amazon a letter and I'm cancelling my subscription, which I paid ridiculous $$ for as well. THIS IS SO UNFAIR NOW I CAN'T EVEN SELL MY TEXTBOOK BACK WHAT A RIP OFF.
NOTHING AGAINST THIS PRODUCT, ONLY THE SERVICE OFFERING IT.

About the Author
Raymond Davis is a former United States Army soldier and military contractor who became the center of an international maelstrom after his involvement in a shooting in Lahore, Pakistan on January 27, 2011. Born and raised in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, Davis spent 10 years in the army, the last six of which he spent as a member of the Special Forces. After being discharged from the army in 2003 because of an injury, Davis worked as a private contractor providing operational security in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Storms Reback is the author of three books All In: The (Almost) Entirely True History of the World Series of Poker, Farha on Omaha: Expert Strategy for Beating Cash Games and Tournaments, and Ship It Holla Ballas!: How a Bunch of 19-Year-Old College Dropouts Used the Internet to Become Poker’s Loudest, Craziest, and Richest Crew. He lives in Austin, Texas with his wife and children.

Powerful read from start to finish.

Powerful read from start to finish. Reading this book exposed me to the human side of Ray Davis that was hidden from general public all that long. As an American of Pakistani origin there is nothing in the book that sounded out of the line or exaggerated. The depiction of Pakistani media and justice system by the author is sadly spot on.

This book gives a well written account of what happened on the front lines and what was happening behind the scenes. The historical lessons helped to see how and why events played out and were very helpful in understanding the reasons many things have gone on there and here. Thank you for your heroic service. You have made your hometown proud!

Zagreb at your fingertips

I'm a bit fan of Jeanne Oliver's website Croatia Traveller both for trip planning as well as on the ground, but I get so frustrated when actually travelling because wifi connections can be few and far between, and you can rarely connect when you really need some critical piece of info, and I hate lugging around bulky guidebooks. So thank you for putting all your great info and insights into this extremely useful book that I have downloaded ahead of time, and now can use on the road regardless of whether I have wifi or not. Even now as I'm planning my trip I can see that It will be a lifesaver!
