This book will provide a reader with a good chance of mathematical training.
When plasma equations need to be modified, just qualitative understanding of plasma theory will not be helpful so much.

Good text but homework problems too easy

The text was nicely written and describes a lot of phenomena but the homework problems were way too easy and most of the time did not even require the knowledge presented in the chapters. For example, many of the problems were of the form "plug this into the quadratic equation" or "add these two equations and simplify". Without problems that present a test of knowledge it was hard for me to solidify my reading or to know whether I really understood it. That criticism aside, the author was able to present a lot of information in an understandable form without getting needlessly bogged down in details.

Chen is the standard for a reason

The standard book for introductory plasma physics is "Introduction to Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion" by Francis Chen. Unfortunately, the semester I took the course, the professor chose to use this text. It lacks any worked-through examples and has no answers to any of the problems so you have little assurance that you are understanding the concepts. Furthermore, the authors have a bad habit of stating, "It is easily shown that ..." and then never showing the derivations, nor providing information on where such derivations may be found. The result is a collection of random equations with a binding and pretty cover. I consistently find myself turning to alternate texts to clarify the material presented in this text. If you are forced to use this book, make certain you have access to a copy of Chen's book and start reading there.

dynamite comes in small packages

THis thin little volume is packed with information on practical spell craft . There is no theory or theology in this one.....straight up Hoodoo spell craft involving written petitions. Written by Cathererine Yronwode, a foremost authority on Hoodoo, this books tells how to use written petition in Hoodoo.�

Using the written word for magic has a long history in magic going all the way back to the Sumerian times. THe Sumerians would use clay bowls with writing that started from the edge and made it's way to �the center. That way when demon's read it they �would go all the way to the center of the bowl and be trapped. ANother version has it going in the opposite direction. THe sumerians were not the only ones to use writing in magic. THe Greeks used lead tablets to write down spells. AFter writing what they wanted they would fold the lead sheet and nail it shut. From their they would throw it into a body of water or bury it in a graveyard. THe Norse used rune staffs to cast magic spells.

Among the several technique taught, are how to make a name paper , a paper petition and some cool ways to write words to increase the effect. Written parchment can be carried on your person, made into a mojo bag even burned with the ashes being swallowed or used as a linament. Uses for these techniques include money spells, love spells, protection spells and crossing spell. Would like to give you an example of each.

For example if you are a gambler you might get a whole nutmeg and wrap it with a signalized two dollar bill, including a mercury dime. Fold the money toward you. A simple mojo to attract love would be to write out a square name paper of the person you wish to attract. Fold it into a packet along with dried rose petal, coriander seed, tonk a bean and the person's hair. Once complete you can keep this as part of your person. A good protection spell would involve writing psalm 91 on paper and then burning it to ash. This could be mixed water for drinking or rubbed in as part of a massage oil.

First of all, the books (I ordered 3 of Ms. Yronwode's titles) arrived on schedule. As soon as I opened them, I found myself diving headlong into each of them alternately. They're all packed from cover-to-cover with all the information I was hoping to find and then some. One of the things that really made me want to buy Yronwode's books was that while reading through the vast body of information on her website, I found answers to further questions as if she knew I was going to ask them. That additionally confirmed her as the real deal to my mind. The lady plays no games in sharing a wealth of knowledge. She gets it poppin' from page 1!

Early on the corporate giants threw cheap and poor dentistry at the public backed by large advertising budgets. Today these large firms are gobbling up good dentists and their practices and now selling good dentistry cheaply; still fueled by advertising budgets you can’t compete against. So what is the independent dentist to do? Get this book!!! It’s filled with gold for the dentist who wants to hold on to the freedom their practice has afforded them; the dentist who wants the practice that supports their lifestyle rather than having a job. Great book on advanced concepts of dental practice marketing! First, Dr McAnally states the problems and agitates the pain that all dentists have, trying to differentiate themselves from other dentists. Then, with his hierarchy pyramid of marketing, he addresses every level, and gives great advice for every level of marketing. His advice, especially at the higher levels of the pyramid is worth many multiples of the price of the book.
This is a must read for any dental professional who is looking to differentiate himself and created the Category Killer Practice that Dr. Mac talks about!

Yhe material is dated and fails to cover many suppliments that are in the news now. I recommend google or youtube for this. It was through youtube I learned cumin reduces intestinal gas (cumin in a cup of warm water before a meal.)

About the Author

Carol R. Ember started at Antioch College as a chemistry major. She began taking social science courses because some were required, but she soon found herself intrigued. There were lots of questions without answers, and she became excited about the possibility of a research career in social science. She spent a year in graduate school at Cornell studying sociology before continuing on to Harvard, where she studied anthropology primarily with John and Beatrice Whiting.

For her Ph.D. dissertation she worked among the Luo of Kenya. While there she noticed that many boys were assigned “girls’ work,” such as babysitting and household chores, because their mothers (who did most of the agriculture) did not have enough girls to help out. She decided to study the possible effects of task assignment on the social behavior of boys. Using systematic behavior observations, she compared girls, boys who did a great deal of girls’ work, and boys who did little such work. She found that boys assigned girls’ work were intermediate in many social behaviors, compared with the other boys and girls. Later, she did cross-cultural research on variation in marriage, family, descent groups, and war and peace, mainly in collaboration with Melvin Ember, whom she married in 1970. All of these cross-cultural studies tested theories on data for worldwide samples of societies.

From 1970 to 1996, she taught at Hunter College of the City University of New York. She has served as president of the Society of Cross-Cultural Research and was one of the directors of the Summer Institutes in Comparative Anthropological Research, which were funded by the National Science Foundation. From 1996 until 2009 she served as executive director of the Human Relations Area Files, Inc. (HRAF), a nonprofit research agency at Yale University. She was appointed President of HRAF in 2010. She is also currently Past-President of the Society for Anthropological Sciences.

After graduating from Columbia College, Melvin Ember went to Yale University for his Ph.D. His mentor at Yale was George Peter Murdock, an anthropologist who was instrumental in promoting cross-cultural research and building a full-text database on the cultures of the world to facilitate cross-cultural hypothesis testing. This database came to be known as the Human Relations Area Files (HRAF) because it was originally sponsored by the Institute of Human Relations at Yale. Growing in annual installments and now distributed in electronic format, the HRAF database currently covers more than 410 cultures, past and present, all over the world.

Melvin Ember did fieldwork for his dissertation in American Samoa, where he conducted a comparison of three villages to study the effects of commercialization on political life. In addition, he did research on descent groups and how they changed with the increase of buying and selling. His cross-cultural studies focused originally on variation in marital residence and descent groups. He has also done cross-cultural research on the relationship between economic and political development, the origin and extension of the incest taboo, the causes of polygyny, and how archaeological correlates of social customs can help us draw inferences about the past.

After four years of research at the National Institute of Mental Health, he taught at Antioch College and then Hunter College of the City University of New York. He has served as president of the Society for Cross-Cultural Research. From 1987 until his death in 2009, he was president of HRAF.

Peter N. Peregrine came to anthropology after completing an undergraduate degree in English. He found anthropology’s social scientific approach to understanding humans more appealing than the humanistic approach he had learned as an English major. He undertook an ethnohistorical study of the relationship between Jesuit missionaries and Native American peoples for his master’s degree and realized that he needed to study archaeology to understand the cultural interactions experienced by Native Americans prior to contact with the Jesuits.

While working on his PhD at Purdue University, Peter Peregrine did research on the prehistoric Mississippian cultures of the eastern United States. He found that interactions between groups were common and had been shaping Native American cultures for centuries. Native Americans approached contact with the Jesuits simply as another in a long string of intercultural exchanges. He also found that relatively little research had been done on Native American interactions and decided that comparative research was a good place to begin examining the topic. Peter Peregrine is professor of anthropology at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin and external professor at the Santa Fe Institute in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He also serves as research associate for the Human Relations Area Files. He continues to do archaeological research, and to teach anthropology and archaeology to undergraduate students.

Closed minded and slanted

I did not enjoy reading this textbook! Instead of presenting facts and practicing the open mind preached by the authors, I found the writing opinionated and one-sided. I usually do not mind reading textbooks, but I got MAD when reading this one. Turned me off from anthropology forever! There were some good points and interesting ideas, but most of the time I was arguing in my head with what I read!

Dreadful!

In sum:
BORING. FLAT. & INSUFFICIENT INFORMATION.

I am in absolute conjunction with the other reviewer about this book. The writing is dry, the author isn't always objective, the concepts presented are trivial and would barely and I mean, barely, pass as an introductory resource for even middle-schoolers. When I finished my class (which I should've dropped), I wanted to BURN this book!!!

I, too, became quite upset while reading this book and arguing with the content I read. Not to mention that it is written in such a dull manner; I just couldn't get into reading it (and I'm a bookworm!). I am now completely uninterested in Anthropology!!!

Anthropology leeches off of Sociology, Archaeology, Psychology, Geography, & Religion studies and this book presents no real defined path of what the real purpose of Anthropology is. The majority of the case study examples provided were from professionals in other fields and not many actual anthropologists! Essentially, after reading this book you will only briefly have been informed about bones and prehistoric societies and their tribes. (In short, Wikipedia could teach more than this book does.)

There's a total lack of critical analysis, modern relevance, or interactiveness for the reader. It's formatted in an extremely flat, lecture style. The examples given are bland and lack depth - the author drops names/case studies but gives no supporting evidence/background information and leaves you clueless or forces you to do the research yourself, if you even care that much...

I've read a lot of textbooks (particularly in the social sciences) and this, by far is THE WORST ! If you have a genuine desire to learn Anthropology, make sure this ISN'T the required reading AND make sure you have a lively professor that will make this dull subject even slightly interesting.

(P.S. I decided to burn the book after all!)
