His idea was to mount a cylinder on a strong frame, so that it could be turned by hand, or by horse or water power. The cylinder was to be provided with rows of teeth, which passed through narrow openings in a curved plate or grating of metal. The rows of teeth, or circular saws, were to be about three fourths of an inch apart. The cotton was to be put into a box, or hopper, so that it rested against the grating through which the saw teeth protruded. When the cylinder was turned, its sharp teeth would catch the cotton and drag it through the grating, tearing it from the seeds and dropping it on the other side, soft and clean. The seeds, which had been left behind, would fall to the bottom of the hopper and pass out through an opening just large enough to let them pass. They would be uninjured by the process, and ready to be planted for another cotton crop.

Mr. Whitney worked rapidly in spite of many inconveniences. But when all was done except the cylinder, progress stopped for a time. His idea had been to make circular saws and mount them one after the other on the cylinder. To make them, he must have tin or steel plates. As he could not buy or make such plates, he was obliged to contrive some other way of making the teeth on the cylinder.

About the Author

Massad Ayoob is one of the pre-eminent fighting handgun trainers in the world. He operates the Lethal Force Institute, training clients in the US and internationally. Massad Ayoob's first volume of _GREATEST HANDGUNS OF THE WORLD_ was such a terrific read that my review asked the publisher to consider a second volume - and here it is! Several friends and I were so glad about this that we actually pre-ordered the book. When it arrived, we found more of the same: imagine you spent a good deal of time going to gun shops and gun shows with a knowledgeable friend, who then filled you in on all the details of the neat guns you ran across. Like the articles in the first book, the ones in this book are liable to have at least some new information for anyone - it's a labor of love, and it makes for a nice mellow read akin to something Elmer Keith would have put together. I gave away several copies of the first book to family and friends, and I envision doing the same with this follow-up volume. Any gun guy would enjoy this.

This is a very descriptive book that goes into detail of some of the greatest handgun manufacturers. I've been around guns for over 25 years and still learned a few things about various gun manufacturers that I did not know. Very Informative and would highley recommend this book.

Buy this one first!

Unlike most sequels, this one is better than the original [vol. 1]! I enjoyed reading vol. 2 more than I did vol.1, largely due to a more interesting mix of subjects. This has less of the "collection of previously published articles" feel of vol. 1 [altho' there *are* sections that were previously published, they are also clearly pointed out in the text.]

The real allure that this volume has over vol. 1 is the greater variety of coverage: instead of a dozen closely-related revolvers built on the same frame in a row [yes, Mas, we know you're a revolver guy! ;-) ], this has sections on handguns of widely different operation and of greater historical import.

Overall, a great read.

My father read to me a passage from RED SKY AT MORNING when I was eleven. He was trying to get me interested in reading the book for myself and chose one of the more memorable scenes. I remember reading it and getting partway into the book and giving up. I just found nothing interesting to the story.

When I turned eighteen, I recalled the book my father told me about many years prior, and picked it up again. What a difference a few years made.

I've literally spent a year getting intimate with this novel. Memorizing every passage, and character development. It's a rare American novel that has very few equal. Many people compare RED SKY AT MORNING with J.D. Salinger's CATCHER IN THE RYE. Both are classic works of literature, and have a very honest look at adolescents, but that's where their similarities end. RED SKY AT MORNING is also a rich look in the life of not just one character, but an entire town as diverse as we are. We grow along-side with those from the small town called Corazon, Sagrado.

Frank Arnold decides to move his family from MOBILE, ALABAMA to a small town in New Mexico where Joshua (our Narrator) spends his Senior year of High School.

RED SKY AT MORNING can be seen as a coming of age story; but it's very much a coming of understanding story as well. The Arnolds came from a mostly White upper class background, where they were the Majority, but by moving to this small town, they are turned into the Minority overnight. Old habits die hard for some, but through exposure others come to accept those who are different.

This is a story that will make you laugh for days. It will make you cry the first time you read it, and the 9th time you read it. It's as bitter-sweet as life itself. I will never come across a book that has touched me as deeply as RED SKY AT MORNING.

You can't read it just once.....

It's funny; I've read this book at least 10 times and I see from the reviews here that lots of people have seen fit to revisit Red Sky at Morning.
I, too, grew up in the "real" Sagrado. In fact, Bradford's son and I were briefly acquainted as teenagers. I think the book is more autobiographical than Bradford would like to admit; my aunt has said that almost all of the teenaged characters were recognizable as actual people at the local high school at that time--especially Chango.
Any time I'm homesick, all I have to do is reread the book and I'm right back home again. I'm glad that so many people from so many walks of life have enjoyed it as much as I have. It totally captures, very affectionately, all of the GOOD things about Northern New Mexico--things you wish would stay the same forever.
It's like Catcher in the Rye, but it's warmer. It lovingly represents the wholly unique people of Northern New Mexico, who are unlike people anywhere else in the world. But it also reflects human nature and adaptation through scenes of humor, pain, the clashing and meshing of cultures, and the inevitable unwelcome changes that come with the passage of time. Red Sky at Morning bears witness to the coming of age of Joshua Arnold--the futile battle to remain young and untouched by the uglier side of the world, the bittersweet and inevitable transformation of boy to man. It was originally an allegory, I believe, parelleling Josh's growing pains with those of a post-war America. Ironically, it is now an allegory for what has become of the "real" Corazon, Sagrado--full of bittersweet memories--the end of an old road and the beginning of newer, less innocent one.
Just beware: you won't be able to put it down and you WILL read it again and again. It really is that good.

Great story! Easy read.

I first heard this book as narrated as a book on tape. I love this story and will read this over and over again.
It's humorous look at adolescence in the 40's is refreshing and easy to read. I wish someone with vision could make a good film adaption of it. There is a little risque wording so I wouldn't recommend this for your 14 year old but some one who is sixteen or older has heard all the words before and it might keep them reading. It also describes a teenager enjoying wine, so read it yourself before giving it to your kid.

"Once you taste significance, success alone will never satisfy."

This is John's most personal and powerful book to date. It is chock-full of personal stories that help illustrate what can happen when you start living life by design instead of default. Everyone wants to make a difference in the world, and "Intentional Living: Choosing a Life that Matters," is the instruction guide for how to make it happen.

As is typical of John's writing style, he shares a number of simple but very powerful ideas and actions you can take to get some momentum on your mission like; start small but believe big, search until you find your why, add value to others from your sweet spot, connect with like-minded people, and more.

I also enjoy the stories he tells about how he came to prominence in his field, and it should not be a surprise: He got around people like Norman Vincent Peale, W. Clement Stone, Zig Ziglar, etc. and invested in their books, conferences and other resources. He was (and still is) intentional about his personal growth and development and he encourages you to do the same throughout the book.

Simple message repeated for 300 pages

This is a perspective book and not a practical book.

What the book does is try and give you a new perspective on life. It tries and gets you to focus on relationships, treating others well, and doing the right thing. Then, you will find happiness and meaning in life. I mean it is a great message, but not the impression I got from reading the book summary and reviews. I was expecting a blueprint with how to's on finances, relationships, job growth, etc. Just getting better in all aspects of life. His message is that if you just become a better person and treat people well those aspects of your life will get better.

He is not wrong. In fact he is very very right in what he is saying, but his message is so simple. I got the gist of it in the summary. I don't feel like the other 300 pages of the book added any value. I simply did not learn more as the book went on. It was just one anecdotal story after another. I was at least hoping for a psychology lesson, studies of human behavior, statistics on what people like and how to interact more meaningfully to connect deeper. None of that is in the book. It's simply a few personal stories of him and others to try and change your perspective on treating others better and for that subject, I have found other books much more helpful.

A Reliable Offering

I like John C Maxwell. His books and some of the things he talks about always speak to me. I am not giving this 3 stars because I didn't like it but mainly because I felt like it was the same as reading his other books. So - in the sense that you can always count on Maxwell to deliver good content with meaning - it was a good but "reliable" book. I just felt like it was "more of the same." If you are not familiar with Maxwell's writings - you will feel like most of his fans do: The content is great and he knows his stuff.

The new edition is a lot worse than the earlier editions

I have found the book very difficult to follow. The book reads more like a research paper than a textbook, in both style and content (for example, there are too many references, most of which are completely unnecesary). Many symbols are left undefined. There are many gaps in the derivations. Many concepts (e.g. the Maragoni effect) are introduced out of proper context. I would not recommend it to anybody. Get an earlier edition if you can.

Good in Some Respects, Disappointing in Others

The latest edition of this wellknown book continues its past tradition in every respect. Although claimed to be a textbook, it is best as a source of references and a compendium of advances in physical chemistry of surfaces. Certain chapters (e.g., surface tension) are good enough for use in classroom, but others are very superficial and very disappointing. It is clear that neither the senior author nor the new one is an expert in most of the topics covered in the book. It appears that they have simply collected references from the literature (quite indiscriminately in many cases) and have attempted to summarize the results. It is still a good book to have, especially since no one else has bothered to write a fairly comprehensive book on the topic. For those interested in the 'dry' side of surface science, Somarjai's volume is superior to this one.

Excellent overview or starting point

How useful and valuable this book is largely depends on what you expect from it. This book provies an overview of the extremely broad field of surface chemistry. As a starting point to learning about that field, this book is excellent. There is validity to the criticisms offered by some other reviewers of this text. The derivations often don't give enough detail and there's not much help in the way of example problems, which can make it difficult for the student to use in a classroom setting. Do not expect extremely detailed and thorough treatments of any particular area of surface chemistry. Nearly any chapter in this book could (and does) have entire texts (and courses) devoted exclusively to that one subject. What you can expect from this book is an introduction to the key areas of surface chemistry. The book is loaded with references to point the interested reader in the right direction for more detailed and thorough treatments of the variety of different areas of surface chemistry. For this reason, I have found it to be a good starting point for learning more about several subjects. In short, this book is excellent if you want a broad overview of the field or need a place to start learning about a particular area of surface chemistry. It's not worth much if you are looking for extremely in depth, thorough treatments of specific areas of surface chemistry.

Los que me conocen saben que soy un gran admirador de John C. Maxwell. No tengo mucho tiempo desde que comenc� a leer sus obras pero sin duda alguna me han servido en la vida diaria; trabajo a cargo de un grupo de j�venes, pero adem�s tambi�n trabajo junto con un equipo y he tenido oportunidad de poner en pr�ctica lo aprendido. Inicialmente, Lo que todo l�der necesita saber es un libro que te impresiona por su tama�o.

Contenido
A primera vista, Lo que todo l�der necesita saber pudiera intimidar a quien lo tenga en sus manos. Con m�s de 500 p�ginas parece ser que no sabes por donde empezar.

Lo mejor de todo es que este libro es un compendio de una colecci�n que ha sido publicada anteriormente bajo el nombre de “101” y cubre una gran cantidad de temas, desde actitud, hasta relaciones e incluso mentor�a. No es necesario empezar desde la p�gina uno para agarrar el hilo de las lecciones, basta con ir directamente al tema de inter�s para iniciar el aprendizaje.

De Liderazgo 101:
Para lograr el m�s alto nivel de efectividad, usted tiene que elevar el tope de la capacidad de liderazgo.

Quienes est�n familiarizados con Maxwell sabr�n que sus lecciones est�n presentadas de una manera muy peculiar. Normalmente inician con una an�cdota personal o de alguno de sus conocidos para despu�s dar algunos conceptos que se pueden relacionar con sus ejemplos, es aqu� donde debemos poner atenci�n y darnos el tiempo de saborearlos. Finalmente, Maxwell termina casi siempre con el desenlace del ejemplo inicial, o bien, con otra historia que confirma los conceptos de la lecci�n.

De Equipo 101:
Para la persona que intenta hacerlo todo sola, el juego realmente se acab�. Si realmente quiere hacer algo de valor, debe conectarse a otros.

Conclusi�n
Lo que todo l�der necesita saber es un libro 100% recomendado si est�s buscando aprender a ser un mejor l�der en cualquier �rea en la que labores. Tambi�n puede servir como una muy buena introducci�n al trabajo de Maxwell, que no por nada es reconocido como uno de los mejores gur�s de liderazgo.
