Vaughn Johansson is the Nashville Assassins' star player. He's brash, cocky, and talented. And he isn't afraid to let anyone know it. He lives his life on his own terms, never forming romantic attachments, and only allowing his very closest to see his true, caring self.

Brie Soledad has the weight of the world on her shoulders. As the staff reporter for the Assassins, she balances her high-profile job and its heavy travel schedule with being the sole provider for her adult brother with Down syndrome. Sure, she'd like to find love. But who has time for that when there are bills to pay?

Brie has been the match to Vaughn's gasoline since the day she first held out her microphone to him. They strike sparks off each other, keeping their friends, the team, and the Assassins fans in stitches. Brie’s refusal to fawn over Vaughn sets his teeth on edge and his blood boiling. Especially in that body part...

Brie's been let down by love before, but she knows she deserves nothing less than real, forever love. Vaughn's past has left deep, hidden scars, and there are some secrets he cannot bear to reveal. As much as Brie wants him, Vaughn may be too big a risk for her wary heart to take. But he is at his best under pressure. When the delayed call is in effect and he has no choice but to score, Vaughn always delivers.

New life for the Assassins!
By Pet
YES! I cannot tell you how happy this book makes me.

Toni Aleo and the Assassins have returned and I’m so damn excited. You may be thinking….but the Assassins haven’t left…the last book Face-Off at the Altar was about the Assassins. Right? Well, when I say they’ve returned I mean Toni has revived this series for me in a big way. I was almost ready to say that it was time for me and this series to part ways.

Before you start burning things and throwing stuff my direction, let me explain…

I’ve been a fan of the Assassins and of Toni Aleo’s writing for a long time, but I don’t think I’ve made any secret of the fact that the Sinclair’s as a whole were not my favorite people (I’m giving a pass to Jace in that statement). I also hated Jordie Thomas with an unholy passion… I know a lot of people loved Jordie…he just ticked me right off… a lot. Let’s just leave it at I was starting to worry that the Assassins draw may have been coming to a close for me.

But, I have to give kudos to Toni. She has resurrected my love for the Assassins with this story of Vaughn and Brie. I am in awe yet again and my faith is restored. I loved this book from beginning to end. I’m not saying that Vaughn didn’t have his issues…don’t we all. But the whole background for this story was what convinced me to give the Assassins one more chance. And I’m so glad I did!

Brie is my newest favorite heroine. She is such a great character to read. She is what we should be raising our daughters to be. She holds herself to an incredibly high standard in her job, in how she takes care of her brother Rod and how she allows herself to be treated by others. The scene with the speed dating had me laughing out loud. There was a time or two that I thought she might have been edging into fighting her attraction to Vaughn a little too hard, but she never fell into where I thought she was just fighting it to be stubborn. She had some legitimate concerns.

Vaughn on the other hand, did actually make me cuss him out a few times. I get he’s not had the best history with people he’d chosen to trust, but it’s pretty obvious that Brie is nothing like the people in his past. I was a little irritated that he was ruining a fantastic thing with Brie just because he was gun shy. And he fought those feelings for Brie hard. Only the depth of his love for his brother and how he chose to express it was what kept the balance between what seemed like two separate personalities and ended up just making me love him more. But damn, that man is a stubborn bastard.

Like a lot of Aleo’s books, this book sets up a whole cast of new characters I can honestly say that I am looking forward to meeting again. I haven’t been this excited for a new book in this series since Laces and Lace. Fantastic writing, fun banter between Vaughn and Brie and a list of other characters who are lovable to the extreme. I’m not so patiently waiting to find out what happens from here. Delayed Call has breathed new life into this series for me.

Another great addition to the series
By Tpagirl
Delayed Call was the eleventh book in the Assassins series by Toni Aleo revolving around the Nashville NHL team.

Vaughn Johansson was the star forward with the killer wrister. He was gorgeous, the jokester and never took anything seriously. Yet, we found that he also had a heart of gold but he came with a ton of baggage.

Brie Soledad was the beautiful Assassins reporter that got under Vaughn's skin. Or was it that Vaughn got under Brie's skin...yea that too and they fought like cats and dogs.

True to Aleo's style, she sent us on a journey of discovery and healing before Vaughn and Brie could truly move forward. And for extra enjoyment, several of our favorite characters from the previous books made appearances.

The storyline was well written with well developed characters. The only major drawback was the editing errors. There were more than I felt was acceptable; focusing primarily on missing, extra or incorrect words.

Additionally, I liked the premise of the story but Vaughn and Brie were a little immature for me. Although they were NA so it was somewhat refreshing to see the lighthearted humor from an innocent age. Not my typical humor but it worked ok for me most of the time.

Within the storyline, Aleo tackled the tough subject of Down's syndrome including the challenges, affects upon the family, the ongoing decisions and the associated costs. It brought depth and complexity to the storyline. I'm not intimately familiar with Down's syndrome but it appeared realistic from a possible perspective. I would imagine in today's society that it could be a hot bed for abuse and fraud if the right options aren't thoroughly explored. Through Aleo's writing, I could feel Brie's anxiety over making the best long term decisions for her brother; yet to also stay within her budget and not send them into bankruptcy.

Lastly, I loved how Aleo intertwined plots from different series. You don't have to read them all in order to follow along, but it's a bonus to her loyal readers. It's like an inside joke. In Delayed Call, it took me awhile to realize that one of the subplots, Wells, Vaughn and Jensen's best friend, was one of those bonus treats. Wells ex was Matty, Audrey's troubling brother in Hooked by Love (book three, Bellevue Bullies). I'm expecting a book for Wells now, but I'm not sure which series we'll see it in or exactly how it will play out.

What was obvious was that Delayed Call was a total set up for Jensen and Wren, which I'm assuming will be the next book in the series. I'm not a huge fan of either one yet so I'm hoping they will get grit and strength once their own story is revealed.

All in all, Delayed Call was entertaining. I continued to enjoy Aleo's writing style and character development. Kudos to Aleo for adding another good story to the series.

5 He's Not Who He Appears To Be Stars!!!
By Franci Neill
I LOVE the Nashville Assassins and I LOVE this book!! This book centers around Vaughn Johansson and Brie Soledad and their love/hate relationship. You know what they say about those kind of relationships don't you? They're ON FIRE in the bedroom... and in this case, it's spot on!!! However, it takes a while for them to get to the bedroom...

This book moves at just the right pace for these two. They each have secrets they're hiding and/or dealing with and let me tell you there are times in this book that you'll be gutted. Vaughn in all his smart-mouthed ways has some history that only a few are privileged to know about and when it comes to Brie uses this to his advantage and knows what buttons to push with her and he does such a good job of it....

"You're weird around her. It's like you want to hate her, but you want to bang her - maybe even more than just bang and you don't like that."

Brie is so awesome in the way she handles Vaughn especially once these two get behind closed doors! She's smart, sexy, intelligent and has a heart of pure gold and he just doesn't know what to do with that. One of the things I loved the most about Brie is her relationship with Rodney her younger brother who needs to be cared for/monitored on a consistent basis. When it comes to Vaughn she doesn't let him get away with anything and I want to fist-bump her because of that. Even though he's amazing on the ice it doesn't give him license to not respect her or others...but we do get to find out why and how he is this way....and it blew me away!!!

Once there is an ignition for these two it's almost like they can't keep their hands off each other and at times I was rolling with them...Vaughn comes out of left field sometimes I'd sit here and think, "No, he didn't just say that...did he?" But he did Brie takes in stride.

Overall this another winner and dare I say Hat Trick for the Nashville Assassins series. Toni has captured these characters perfectly. This includes all the secondary characters, like Jensen, Wren, Wells and others and let's not forget Tricksie because she adds a whole different element to this story and it was the best!! I can't wait to see what happens in the future for this couple because their life together is going to be one heck of a ride!

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month for March 2015: When naturalist and falconer Helen Macdonald lost her beloved father, she “thought [her] world was ending.” Seems apropos, then, that her journey from crippling grief to something resembling grace is on the wings of another deadly bird of prey--the notoriously prickly, and murderous, goshawk. In H Is for Hawk, you will meet Mabel, not your typical bloodthirsty specimen, as she is trained to hunt like the goshawks of yore. It is this brash, slightly mad undertaking that wrenches Macdonald free from despair, and brings her to a place where she can begin again. Doesn’t sound like your kind of thing? You’d be surprised. Macdonald’s gorgeously wrought prose holds you in thrall from the first page, and provides something akin to the escape, and salvation, that nature provides her. In ‘Hawk’ you will also learn about the famed Arthurian novelist T.H. White, a kindred soul to Macdonald in certain ways. One of the things that endeared him to her was his “childish delight” with all things wild, something you’ll be hard-pressed not to experience as soon as you tap into this tome. –Erin Kodicek

"Breathtaking . . . Helen Macdonald renders an indelible impression of a raptor’s fierce essence—and her own—with words that mimic feathers, so impossibly pretty we don’t notice their astonishing engineering." —Vicki Constantine Croke, New York Times Book Review (cover review)

"Helen Macdonald’s beautiful and nearly feral book, H Is for Hawk, reminds us that excellent nature writing can lay bare some of the intimacies of the wild world as well. Her book is so good that, at times, it hurt me to read it. It draws blood, in ways that seem curative. . . . [An] instant classic." —Dwight Garner, New York Times

"Extraordinary . . . indelible . . . [it contains] one of the most memorable passages I’ve read this year, or for that matter this decade . . . Mabel is described so vividly she becomes almost physically present on the page." —Lev Grossman, TIME

"Captivating and beautifully written, it’s a meditation on the bond between beasts and humans and the pain and beauty of being alive." —People (Book of the Week)

"One of the loveliest things you’ll read this year . . . You’ll never see a bird overhead the same way again. A-" —Jason Sheeler, Entertainment Weekly

"[A] singular book that combines memoir and landscape, history and falconry . . . it is not like anything I've ever read . . . what Macdonald tells us so eloquently in her fine memoir [is] that transformation of our docile or resigned lives can be had if we only look up into the world." —Susan Straight, Los Angeles Times

"Had there been an award for the best new book that defies every genre, I imagine it would have won that too. . . . Coherent, complete, and riveting, perhaps the finest nonfiction I read in the past year." —Kathryn Schulz, New Yorker

"The art of Macdonald’s book is in the way that she weaves together various kinds of falling apart—the way she loops one unraveling thread of meaning into another. . . . What’s lovely about [it] is the clarity with which she sees both the inner and outer worlds that she lives in." —Caleb Crain, New York Review of Books

"One of the most riveting encounters between a human being and an animal ever written." —Simon Worrall, National Geographic

"Assured, honest and raw . . . a soaring wonder of a book." —Daneet Steffens, Boston Globe

"An elegantly written amalgam of nature writing, personal memoir, literary portrait and an examination of bereavement. . . . It illuminates unexpected things in unexpected ways." —Guy Gavriel Kay, Washington Post

"One of a kind . . . Macdonald is a poet, her language rich and taut. . . . As she descends into a wild, nearly mad connection with her hawk, her words keep powerful track. . . . [She] brings her observer's eye and poet's voice to the universal experience of sorrow and loss." —Barbara Brotman, Chicago Tribune

"A heart-poundingly good read." —Helen W. Mallon, Philadelphia Inquirer

"H Is for Hawk is about attention: about seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, crying, screaming, raging . . . it is, in short, quite deliberately about reckoning with the wild within as well as without, as each informs, mimics, and illuminates the other." —Dinah Lenney, Los Angeles Review of Books

"A really beautiful book. It is a bit about death and loss. . . . It's about literature. It's about nature. She goes into so much detail. It's very rich." —Philippa Gregory, Tampa Bay Times

"Incandescent . . . glorious, passionate, and heartbreaking." —Sy Montgomery, Orion

"A wonderful, hard-to-classify, nonfiction chimera . . . this book grips at your heart." —Rain Taxi

"Written in limpid, allusive prose, H Is for Hawk is a significant contribution to the literature of the human encounter with the natural world." —Sierra Club Magazine

"A triumph." —Nick Willoughby, Salon

"The hawk-book's form is perfect. It prickles your skin the way nature can when you are surprised by an animal in your path. Some books are not books but visitations, and this one has crossed its share of thresholds before arriving here, to an impossible middle perch between wilderness and culture, past and present, life and death." —Katy Waldman, Slate

"A genre-busting dazzler of a book, worthy of the near-universal accolades that it's received so far." —Elisabeth Donnelly, Flavorwire

"Extraordinary . . . Macdonald elegantly weaves multitudinous and extremely complex issues into a single work of seamless prose." —Lucy Scholes, The Daily Beast

"The echoes of myth in Macdonald’s writing, however subtle and unobtrusive, lend her book an emotional weight usually reserved only for literature, and a grace only for poetry. But this is one of the book’s great achievements: to belong to several genres at once, and to succeed at all of them." —Madeleine Larue, The Millions

"[Macdonald’s] writing—about soil and weather, myth and history, pain and its slow easing—retains the qualities of [her hawk] Mabel's wild heart, and the commanding scope and piercing accuracy of her hawk's eye." —Joanna Scutts, Newsday

"Brutal yet redemptive . . . a real stunner." —Alexis Burling, The Oregonian

"Gorgeous." —Diane Rehm, The Diane Rehm Show

"A wonder both of nature and of meditative writing." —Maureen Corrigan, Fresh Air with Terry Gross

"To read Helen Macdonald's new memoir is to have every cell of your body awake and alive." —Robin Young, Here and Now

"In this profoundly inquiring and wholly enrapturing memoir, Macdonald exquisitely and unforgettably entwines misery and astonishment, elegy and natural history, human and hawk." —Donna Seaman, Booklist (starred review)

"An inspired, beautiful and absorbing account of a woman battling grief—with a goshawk. . . . Writing with breathless urgency . . . Macdonald broadens her scope well beyond herself to focus on the antagonism between people and the environment. Whether you call this a personal story or nature writing, it's poignant, thoughtful and moving—and likely to become a classic in either genre." —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"A unique and beautiful book with a searing emotional honesty, and descriptive language that is unparalleled in modern literature." —Costa Book Award citation

"H is for Hawk is a work of great spirit and wonder, illuminated equally by terror and desire. Each beautiful sentence is capable of taking a reader’s breath. The book is built of feather and bone, intelligence and blood, and a vulnerability so profound as to conjure that vulnerability’s shadow, which is the great power of honesty. It is not just a definitive work on falconry; it is a definitive work on humanity, and all that can and cannot be possessed." —Rick Bass

"A lovely touching book about a young woman grieving over the death of her father becoming rejuvenated by training one of the roughest, most difficult creatures in the heavens, the goshawk." —Jim Harrison

"In addition to being an excellent memoir of loss and grief, H is for Hawk is a wonderful exploration of how birds of prey can function as metaphor to produce art and a roadmap for human lives. Read it and enrich your life." —Dan O’Brien

"Rich with the poetry of ideation, the narrative flows through the author’s deeply textured story of personal loss like a mountain wind, swirling seamlessly through fields of literature, biology, natural history, and the art of hunting with hawks. Readers might do well to absorb this book a bite at a time—but be prepared for a full meal." —Lynn Schooler

"A beautiful book on so many levels. Macdonald fearlessly probes each facet of grief and traverses its wilderness to reach redemption. But most beautiful of all is the complex, layered bond that builds between her and Mabel, her hawk. Who would have guessed that human and bird could share so much?" —Jan DeBlieu

"In this elegant synthesis of memoir and literary sleuthing . . . Macdonald describes in beautiful, thoughtful prose how she comes to terms with death in new and startling ways." —Publishers Weekly

"A dazzling piece of work: deeply affecting, utterly fascinating and blazing with love . . . a deeply human work shot through, like cloth of gold, with intelligence and compassion—an exemplar of the mysterious alchemy by which suffering can be transmuted into beauty. I will be surprised if a better book than H is for Hawk is published this year." —Melissa Harrison, Financial Times

"More than any other writer I know, including her beloved [T.H.] White, Macdonald is able to summon the mental world of a bird of prey . . . she extends the boundaries of nature writing. As a naturalist she has somehow acquired her bird's laser-like visual acuity. As a writer she combines a lexicographer's pleasure in words as carefully curated objects with an inventive passion for new words or for ways of releasing fresh effects from the old stock. . . . Macdonald looks set to revive the genre." —Mark Cocker, Guardian

"A talon-sharp memoir that will thrill and chill you to the bone . . . Macdonald has just the right blend of the scientist and the poet, of observing on the one hand and feeling on the other." —Craig Brown, Daily Mail

"What [Macdonald] has achieved is a very rare thing in literature—a completely realistic account of a human relationship with animal consciousness. . . . Her training of Mabel has the suspense and tension of the here and now. You are gripped by the slightest movement, by the turn of every feather. It is a soaring performance and Mabel is the star." —John Carey, Sunday Times

"A well-wrought book, one part memoir, one part gorgeous evocation of the natural world and one part literary meditation . . . lit with flashes of grace, a grace that sweeps down to the reader to hold her wrist tight with beautiful, terrible claws. The discovery of the season." —Erica Wagner, Economist

"The magnificent H is for Hawk [has] grabbed me by its talons . . . [it’s] nature writing, but not as you know it. Astounding." —Caroline Sanderson, The Bookseller

"It sings. I couldn’t stop reading." —Mark Haddon, author of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and A Spot of Bother

"This beautiful book is at once heartfelt and clever in the way it mixes elegy with celebration: elegy for a father lost, celebration of a hawk found - and in the finding also a celebration of countryside, forbears of one kind and another, life-in-death. At a time of very distinguished writing about the relationship between human kind and the environment, it is immediately pre-eminent." —Andrew Motion, author of In the Blood

"A deep, dark work of terrible beauty that will open fissures in the stoniest heart. . . . Macdonald is a survivor . . . she has produced one of the most eloquent accounts of bereavement you could hope to read . . . A grief memoir with wings." —The Bookseller

"A book made from the heart that goes to the heart . . . It combines old and new nature and human nature with great originality. No one who has looked up to see a bird of prey cross the sky could read it and not have their life shifted." —Tim Dee, author of The Running Sky

"The most magical book I have ever read." —Olivia Laing, author

Challenging, mesmerising, poetic
By roz morris
Some of my favourite books have been memoirs of a challenging relationship with an animal - Jane Shilling's Fox in the Cupboard, Gavin Maxwell's otter oeuvre. H is for Hawk belongs alongside them.
If that description 'relationship with an animal' sounds fluffy or cosy to you, think again. These animals aren't pets. They are forces to be negotiated with, embodiments of the wild that pitch you into a different way of life and living. You don't invite an otter, a horse or a goshawk to be your friend. You go to their world. You tune into their mind, their instincts, their priorities, their joys, their fears - and in so doing, you find the places where you are wild yourself. And that wildness doesn't mean uncomplicated freedom. Its values have little in common with human concerns. It is a stripped-away state of being, a universe of survival and struggle, where trust might be life or death.
In H is for Hawk, Helen Macdonald's journey has added significance. She acquired her goshawk when in the depths of mourning after her father died suddenly. So the hawk is a voyage into a land of death, for not only is her hawk - who she names Mabel - red in tooth and claw, she is a mysterious, highly tuned instrument of death. The only fluffiness in this book is the down on the new-born chicks that are Mabel's staple food.
Macdonald does not shy away from this. A lifelong falconer, she defines her world early in the book, banishing any romantic notions of the falconry sport when she writes of a hawk 'murdering a pigeon'. In the same spirit, this book is raw in emotional tone too. As we see what hawks do, we see what grief does. It strips the world to a race of life and death, to basic needs, to negotiations with a creature that does not understand words or language but operates in a key of hunger, speed and instinct. Mabel has to be kept on a careful edge of hunger and satiation in order to hunt and fly. If Helen feeds her too much she won't have the appetite or prowess to perform. Too little, and she becomes desperate and aggressive.
And despite her falconry experience, Macdonald finds the training a harrowing process. Establishing a relationship with this creature is an ordeal of patience, nerves, and a challenge to everything she finds certain in her life - which, in her bereaved state, is very little.
As well as a passage through the valley of mourning, this book is also an exploration of a talismanic work from Macdonald's own past, The Goshawk by TH White. She first read it as a child, and was appalled by White's apparent ignorance, clumsiness and cruelty as his time with his hawk did not go well. Nevertheless, she has read it to shreds over the years, first because there were few books for a falcon-mad girl to read, but latterly because she saw something else. It wasn't about hawks, it was about a man, a homosexual, emotionally scarred man who was struggling to tame his own nature. Parts of her narrative examine White's life, decoding this figure whose book had been such a presence from her childhood days. And just as White was destabilised by his experience taming hawks, Macdonald finds herself pushed to desperation. Taming the bird becomes the centre of her life, and not just for its own sake. It is a rite of reckoning, of approaching a more inaccessible, unavoidable inner process.
I haven't yet mentioned Macdonald's prose - and I must. It is sublime, haunting, transforming, written with the heart of a poet. I could quote the entire book if I started picking choice passages, so I'll make do with just this, her description of walking the fields with Mabel flying behind her 'like a personal angel'.
And so this book will stay with you, as a challenging, mesmerising messenger.

Mending the Scars
By Roger Brunyate
I almost never read non-fiction; I am not sure I know how to appraise it. But I can recognize good writing. Try this: second page of the book, Macdonald saying that few people will have seen a hawk making a kill… "But maybe you have: maybe you've glanced out of the window and seen there, on the lawn, a bloody great hawk murdering a pigeon, or a blackbird, or a magpie, and it looks the hugest, most impressive piece of wildness you have ever seen, like someone's tipped a snow leopard into your kitchen and you find it eating the cat." Or again, on the next page: "Have you ever watched a deer walking out from cover? They step, stop, and stay, motionless, nose to the air, looking and smelling. A nervous twitch might run down their flanks. And then, reassured that all is safe, they ankle their way out of the brush to graze." Such a simple direct style, almost conversational. And then, out of nowhere, she slips in the extraordinary image of the snow leopard, or the unexpectedly perfect verb, "ankle." Helen Macdonald, naturalist, historian, research fellow at Cambridge, writes in the great tradition of British nature writing, with a keen eye and fine-point pen. I doubt I will see writing this good again this year, whether in fiction or non-fiction.

On one level, Macdonald's book is the record of a season spent training a goshawk that she names Mabel. She is no stranger to falconry, having been fascinated by birds since she was a child. As a historian, she has read all the literature on this aristocratic sport. She has trained sparrowhawks and falcons from her late teens. But the goshawk is larger and rarer, with a reputation for being both more dangerous and more temperamental. She orders one from Northern Ireland and meets the seller off the boat on the bleak Scottish coast. "I grabbed the hood from the box and turned to the hawk. Her beak was open, her hackles raised; her wild eyes were the colour of sun on white paper, and they stared because the whole world had fallen into them at once." The saga of her attempt to enter into some kind of relationship with this bird -- patient waiting, sleepless nights, small triumphs, and devastating setbacks -- reads as an emotional roller-coaster described with the precision of a scientist. Yet what she is describing is herself as much as the bird; at times, she virtually becomes the goshawk, seeing the world through her eyes, losing the ability to communicate with other human beings.

The book is also a halting dialogue with the souls of two men, both dead. One is her father, a news photographer whose sudden death sends her into a tailspin; the book might almost be called "The Year of Magical Hawking." I found it just as powerful as Joan Didion's memoir and, for me at least, much closer to home. It is clear that this father-daughter relationship must have been an extraordinary one; the boy who would attempt to bring some order to the destruction of WW2 by obsessively listing the planes returning to Biggin Hill now teaching his daughter the patience required to observe the other kinds of aerial fighters, but also the wonder and variety of the earthbound world all around her.

The other man is the English writer T. H. White, who would become famous for his recreations of the Arthurian legend in THE SWORD IN THE STONE and THE ONCE AND FUTURE KING. In between quitting his job as a prep-school master and achieving fame as an author, White moved to a cottage in the country and bought a goshawk which he attempted to train, writing about it many years later in his book THE GOSHAWK. It is, however, a book about a falconer who does everything wrong, treating the bird with an unintentional cruelty that leads only to failure. But Macdonald looks beyond the failure to the psychopathy behind it, the tragedy of a lonely boy treated cruelly by his colonial parents and cane-wielding schoolmasters to the point where he abhors violence yet lacks examples of love with which to replace it. Her portrait of White is extraordinarily perceptive, but it is her own life she must deal with. And here at least, she begins to succeed, as in this final quotation, from late in the book:

"I put White's book on the shelves, make myself a cup of tea. I'm in a contemplative mood. I'd brought the hawk into my world and then I pretended I lived in hers. Now it feels different: we share our lives happily in all their separation. I look down on my hands. There are scars on them now. Thin white lines. One is from her talons when she was fractious with hunger; it feels like a warning made flesh. Another is a blackthorn rip from the time I'd pushed through a hedge to find the hawk I thought I'd lost. And there were other scars, too, but they were not visible. They were the ones she'd helped mend, not make."

A remarkable experience for all nature-lovers
By Jean Gill
This promised to be my kind of book; grief and healing through immersion in the natural world, specifically through training a goshawk. Add to these ingredients a parallel rediscovery of T.H.White's own book on training a bird of prey, 'the Goshawk' (which I haven't read but as 'The Once and Future King was my favourite book throughout adolescence, I knew a little about the writer). I wasn't disappointed.

Beautifully written, this is a book to savour, to read and re-read, slowly. I lived through every moment of frustration and breakthrough in training Mabel. I loved the wealth of falconry detail and appreciated Helen Macdonald's sharp analysis of 'the baggage' in all the advice. Sexism, philosophy, animal rights and - above all - death: this passionate adventure in the company of a wild creature raises some big questions and offers only the experience itself in response.

I am still thinking about the book; about the egotism of extreme grief, about the way we bring our own beliefs and emotions to our relationships with 'animals', and about the falconry training methods themselves. As I say, this is my kind of book; one of the best I've read this year, perhaps one of the best ever.

Blockbuster Drugs: The Rise and Decline of the Pharmaceutical Industry, by Jie Jack Li

For the world's largest prescription drug manufacturers, the last few years have been a harrowing time. Recently, Pfizer's Lipitor, GlaxoSmithKline's Advair, AstraZeneca's Seroquel, and Sanofi-Aventis and Bristol-Myers Squibb's Plavix all came off patent in the crucial U.S. market. This so-called "patent cliff" meant hundreds of billions of dollars in lost revenue and has pharmaceutical developers scrambling to create new drugs and litigating to extend current patent protections.

Having spent most of his career in drug discovery in "big pharma," Dr. Li now delivers an insider's account of how the drug industry ascended to its plateau and explores the nature of the turmoil it faces in the coming years. He begins with a survey of the landscape before "blockbuster drugs," and proceeds to describe how those drugs were discovered and subsequently became integral to the business models of large pharmaceutical companies. For example, in early 1980s, Tagamet, the first "blockbuster drug," transformed a minor Philadelphia-based drug maker named SmithKline & French into the world's ninth-largest pharmaceutical company in terms of sales. The project that delivered Tagamet was nearly terminated several times because research efforts begun in 1964 produced no apparent results within the first eleven years. Similar stories accompany the discovery and development of now-ubiquitous prescription drugs, among them Claritin, Prilosec, Nexium, Plavix, and Ambien.

These stories, and the facets of the pharmaceutical industry that they reveal, can teach us valuable lessons and reveal many crucial aspects about the future landscape of drug discovery. As always, Dr. Li writes in a readable style and intersperses fascinating stories of scientific discovery with engaging human drama.

From Publishers Weekly
Li (Laughing Gas, Viagra and Lipitor: The Human Stories Behind the Drugs We Use) surveys Big Pharma's €œgolden age€ with a nostalgic yet thoughtful history of the science and personalities behind drugs that changed the lives of countless patients while making billions of dollars for the companies that brought them to market. The author examines five classes of blockbusters that gave Big Pharma both esteem and fortunes: from Tagament and Prilosec for peptic ulcers to blockbuster allergy treatments such as Benadryl and Claritin, to blood thinners that refined old-line heparin, to the modern conquest of pain with drugs descended from opium—€œone of the first medicines for man.€ Li also engagingly relates the tales of the human conflict often involved with discovery, like a precipitous one-year drop in profits that resulted from a feud between an American drug company and one of its Canadian counterparts. Drug discovery is now getting more attention from academia as new products wane, Li notes, but he decries Big Pharma's €œmerger mania€ and its tarnished reputation, especially following Merck's abrupt withdrawal of anti-inflammatory Vioxx because it led to increased risk of heart attacks and strokes among those taking it. Nevertheless, Li delights in the €œcreativity, serendipity and perseverance€ of big drug discoveries—lessons he hopes may prompt a renaissance in the industry. (Dec.)

Review

Recipient of the 2015 Alpha Sigma Nu Book Award.

"Once again, with his latest book, Jack Li has produced a wonderfully fascinating and rich history of the so-called 'Blockbuster Drugs.' From the treatment of ulcers and acid reflux, to the control of allergies, and the conquest of pain, Dr. Li weaves a beautiful tale of these extraordinary medicines, familiar to all. The book is full of detail, with an extensive bibliography, and, for the molecular connoisseur, includes chemical structures in the Appendix. Dr. Li is rapidly becoming a premiere figure for writing about medicines for the educated population!" -- Gordon W. Gribble, The Dartmouth Professor of Chemistry, Dartmouth University

"This enjoyable book describes more than a century of progress in the development of many major new medicines for the treatment of human illness. It provides deep insights into the process of innovation and also the remarkable individuals responsible for it. The accounts are understandable to the non-scientist but also valuable to researchers and practitioners of modern medicine. There is a nice balance between the human, historical and medical sides of drug discovery -- one of the most consequential activities of our times." -- E.J. Corey, Nobel Laureate, Harvard University

"Jie Jack Li takes us through the ages of pharmaceuticals in this informative and engaging book. Professor Li links the medical world with its much broader cultural background in a way that will appeal to many. If you are interested in the past, present, and future of the medicines you take and the background to their production, look no further than this book." --New York Journal of Books

A Highly Readable Introduction to Modern Pharmaceutical Innovation
By Mr Philip C Burcham
This is a terrific book that I couldn't put down. I discovered Dr Li's writings via his earlier book from OUP, Laughing Gas, Viagra and Lipitor, which I liked so much that I use it as "No. 1 recommended reading" in a popular fresher's course on pharmaceutical innovation called "Drugs that Changed the World" that I teach with pharmacology and clinical colleagues at my university. If you also liked his earlier book I think you'll enjoy this one because Dr Li fills in some gaps in the original work. I personally learned oodles of fascinating snippets that will help spice up an otherwise dull pharmacology lecture. I could quibble over one or two minor omissions of pharmacological details, and I wish the text contained more molecular structures to show the "chemical evolution" of therapeutic classes so I didn't have to keep flipping to the appendix, but otherwise this book is really good. Dr Li is to be commended for seeking to reach a wider audience with the fascinating stories surrounding the scientific, political and intellectual energy required to bring new medicines to market.

By Rodger Shepherd
The scope of this book is well covered in the publisher's review. As a retired physician I found the stories of how modern drugs are developed fascinating. Medicinal chemists seem to build and modify molecules as if they were made of Legos. The vast sums of money at stake in "big pharma" are staggering. The author estimates that the development of a successful new drug costs around $1.3 BILLION! This investment must be recovered before the patent runs out or a better drug is marketed by some rival. This window of opportunity can be only few years long. Hence the high price of newly marketed breakthrough drugs. This is the system that has evolved in our society for stimulating a constant stream of wonder drugs. There may not be a better one.
Contrary to the publisher's reviews, this book is not free of jargon, especially chemical nomenclature. However, I rapidly learned to ignore that and concentrate on the themes of the book. The author does introduce and reuse a lot of acronyms, and I would have appreciated a glossary of these abbreviations.

This is a short account of the wives of Muhammad (pbuh), meant to shed light on the individual personalities of the eleven wives and the circumstances of the various marriages. The wisdom behind Muhammad's (pbuh) polygamy is explained in this account.

This writing dispels myths about Ayesha, the infamous child bride. It also showcases facts about Hafsa and Umme Salamah, who alongwith Ayesha, were three women who safeguarded the religious tradition of Islam. Their roles are Iconoclastic in the Abrahamic Tradition.

Review from Eva's Sanctuary
By Eva J. Coppersmith
This is a historical account of Muhammed's eleven wives. It documents the family life of Muhammed and how it is a road map for all Muslim men and the true standing of women in Islam. It is a short account of the prophet Muhammed and gives insight into the personalities of his many wives. It also goes into some detail concerning the controversial Ayesha, one of the single greatest religious sources in Islam. It explains the debate in her age when she supposedly married Muhammed. There has apparently been debate that she was married to Muhammed when she was six and consummated the marriage at the age of nine. The author explains his theories of her marrying at the age of eighteen.

This is not my usual type of read and I am not a fan of history. Sorry, historians, it is what it is. I was, however, quite fascinated with this book. I found this book extremely well written by this Indie author, and even though short and condensed. full of seemingly creditable information. I say seemingly, because I did not go to texts to verify information. I will leave this to those who have the desire and inclination to do so. I do highly recommend this book for those who may be interested in the subject matter and have a desire to explore this subject further.

I wish to thank Aliya for providing me with a copy of her book to read and review. I was not required to write a positive review, only that I keep an open mind and write an honest review. I was not compensated in any way except for receiving a copy of the book to read.

My Thoughts

There is no debate that Muhammad had eleven wives, it's written in all the history books Aliya Anjum does a great job in giving a great account if each wife. Along with being able to describe how the the actions of Muhammad help shape how the modern Muslim man is suppose to act today according to their faith
Anjum also puts on the record the theory that Muhammad took a underage wife (Ayesha) at the age of six and then when she was the age nine took her and consummated the marriage. That being said Anjum believes in her opinion that Ayesha was more like 18 when she started living with Muhammad.

I am some what of a history buff and like to read about historical facts, which Anjum did a great job of recounting the facts. I for one like to read about those facts in more of a story fashion, where Muhammad's Wives is written in the list fashion. This is a personal preference and in no way does it reflect the writing of this book. If you are a history buff, then you might want to look at Muhammad's wives.

The Mothers of Muslims
By 315muslimah
I like the information in this book. If you're just learning about Islam or Prophet Muhammad(S.A.W) then you have to know his wives as the wives dispel the much misunderstood treatment of wives in Islam. They weren't meek women and not should any wife be as the examples show of the wives of The Messenger of Allah. This book introduces the reader to women of Islam not slaves to the husband. Once you read this book you may get a better understanding of true Islam minus cultural injected sexism against women. This book opens the door to knowledge of Muslim wives and hopefully to seek more knowledge of the highest regard to these most highly respected women. Keeping up my search for even deeper relationship with these wives has just begun. This book ignites more understanding of them in a limited length so the author did a great job in compiling as much in this book to be better understood by the novice or the Muslim in search of knowledge or understanding of Islam.

This young lady Is beautiful and alluring
By asatrued
You can read this whole book in about an hour. This young lady Is beautiful and alluring. I just wish there were more facts about her, a lot of writings about Maria is speculation, some good and some not so good. You be the judge. Don't believe all you read but yet believe all you read that is good.

The first half is great, containing some good historical facts pertaining to Maria Orsic and the Vril symbol. The second half is hit or miss as I am not sure how much I believe in the medium of Joel Tucker, who is introduced as a medium in contact with the late Maria Orsic.

It was organized nicely with the causes of acne
By Anne D
This book provides a new perspective to medication-free resolution of acne.

It was organized nicely with the causes of acne, how to recognize various types of pimples and most importantly, how to treat it effectively with diet and supplements.

The information is backed by research, which was a nice change from the hundreds of acne blogs that are just based on off-the-cuff advice.

I have suffered from mild acne for years that I was able to clear in 2 months by treating my gut - one of the routes this book recommends.

The diet plan was enjoyable and realistic with a great selection of delicious recipes.

Definitely recommending this book to anyone I know who still struggles with acne!
