About the Author
Born in London and educated in Watford, Brian qualified as a teacher and taught mathematics and drafting for 14 years before being ordained for the ministry. After four years of service in the UK he became a missionary in Africa, serving six years in Zimbabwe, one in Zambia and 13 in Liberia.

Church planting amidst civil war

When Brian and Dorothy Knightley were sent to take over leadership of the Salvation Army mission in Liberia in 1991, they were stepping into the middle of a civil war that still had many years to run. Their story is told in this book by Brian. The Salvation Army had first started work in the country some three years previously, and by the time the Knightleys left in 2004 numerous churches had been planted and several schools started.

While the Salvation Army is best known to outsiders for its work amongst the poor, this story is mainly about evangelism and church planting. There are some negative connotations to the "army" metaphor in a country where various rebel armies are fighting for dominance, but such problems were reduced when people came to understand what the Salvation Army stood for. It is interesting to observe how traditional Salvation Army outreach techniques - playing brass instruments, attracting a crowd, preaching outdoors - succeeded in the Liberian context.

The "business as usual" approach to church planting taken by the Knightleys whilst dodging rebel bullets seems extraordinary. They did have to evacuate in 1996 when rebel president Charles Taylor's men were systematically looting every house in their street and killing the inhabitants, although not before telephoning Charles Taylor and speaking to the man himself. Even after this horrific event, they could not wait to return and get on with the work.

The author is not a professional writer, but the book is not difficult to read. Although many may be attracted to read it because of the extraordinary circumstances occurring in Liberia, its true value lies in its description of a successful church planting movement.

Southwest Airlines began operating in 1971 with four planes serving three cities and with revenues of $2 million. In 1995, the company had 224 planes serving 45 cities and revenues of almost $3 billion. Moreover, the company has made a profit every year since 1973, one of the few airlines that can make that claim. The authors, a husband and wife who are partners in a San Diego consulting firm, attribute much of Southwest's success to the willingness of its management, led by chairman Herb Kelleher, to be innovative. Southwest's primary operating philosophy is low fares and lots of flights. To make this formula work, Southwest management has created a culture where employees are treated as the company's number one asset. The Freibergs list a number of things the airline management does to benefit its employees, including such programs as profit-sharing and empowering employees to make decisions. Southwest also mixes in New Age management techniques, such as celebrating different milestones, and letting love play a part in running the airline (the company's stock ticker symbol is LUV). The Freibergs state up front that their work is not an expose and make no apologies for presenting a very positive and optimistic view. The authors discuss Southwest's philosophy under the leadership of its dynamic and charismatic CEO, Herb Kelleher, who attributes the company's success to its outstanding customer service; low fares and maintenance (no meals are served, only nuts); short-haul, high-frequency, point-to-point service; and a belief that employees come first. A new Southwest Airlines employee agrees. . .

I have read the reviews about how this book is "mushy." I think maybe because they can't believe that a company this good really exists. I am a brand-new employee to SWA, and this book is given to every new employee at the day-long welcome class. After participating in the class, reading this book, and experiencing the SWA culture first-hand, I can safely say that the book does NOT exaggerate! The feel-good style emphasized over and over in the book is a reality. People care about each other. Everyday (as shown in the book) everyone is made to feel valuable--and it makes you want to work harder, work smarter, and spread the LUV. Others may "say" that's what they are doing, but somehow it always comes back to "the rules." Herb Kelleher and crew are breaking the rules--and showing the others how to make a profit while caring about the dignity and welfare of the SWA family. Great and easily read book. Highly recommended.

An excellent read about an excellent company

If you've wondered how this small Texas airline outsmarted the larger giant airlines, read it all here. After reading this book, I was left with many ideas about how to incorporate more fun into my own work life, while increasing productivity. The corporate culture of Southwest is so ingrained into the employees! Fly with them, and notice how different their people are, and how they each seem to enjoy their job! I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Good Book on Management

This is a good book on management. The authors discusses how SouthWest Airlines manages problems under tight constraints and intense competition. The book emphasises how "out of box" thinking helps achieve the results faster. It shows how the rules can be re-defined and make impossible to happen. It gives a whole new perspective on how Airlines should operate. It sets new records to be surpassed by itself. Gives good insights in to the corporate recruiting and retention of the employees. On a personal level, it is a good book on how to manage in difficult times, how to manage with limited resources, how to be optimistic, how with courage, determination and constancy of purpose one can overcome heavy odds in personal life to fulfill one's dreams. Every 15 days I read a new book on management/self-help. But this is the only book I continuously refer to again and again. It has changed my attitude altogether. I feel every corporation wishing to transform the work culture from dull and boring to interesting work place should give this book to every employee.

For the last few years I've been working on starting up businesses and this is the biggest problem that I've struggled with. We all have a great idea but great ideas don't always make a great product.

His last book gave me a lot to think about and I've been experimenting with works best for me. It's taken a lot of work but I've become much better at finding and recruiting talent.

I've just started reading this book but it's excellent so far. I don't follow many authors but Mike is fantastic and his insight is excellent. Support this author buy his book, I'd love to see more from him. There's so much to learn. :)

Written in haste, it's a quilt of blog posts that's more of a brochure for his courses and books. He cites many other blog posts and authors but only hyperlinks to his own content. Aishwarya Tipnis is an architect from the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi, with a Master s Degree in European Urban Conservation from the University of Dundee, Scotland. She is the recipient of Commonwealth Professional Fellowship 2011, Bonjour India Travel Fellowship from the Embassy of France 2010, and the Scottish International Scholarship 2006. Her work focuses on bridging the gap between contemporary architecture and conservation practice and believes that heritage environment is the starting point for sustainable development. As an urban conservation consultant her projects include Redevelopment of Chandni Chowk Delhi, Redevelopment of the Lady Hardinge Medical College and Hospital, New Delhi, and the Identifi cation of Shared Cultural Heritage: French Heritage in India. She is currently a visiting faculty at the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi.

I bought this book in the hopes that it would also contain plans for some wall designs. It did not. However the book did contain some excellent examples of designs. I guess I should have trusted the title

Pretty pictures, useless book

A written-by-committee book full of beautiful photographs, mostly of built-in bookshelves and cabinets.
You'll get no help PLANNING a wall system. There are lots of photo examples in rooms with soaring twenty-foot ceilings. Lots of examples designed by architects and built in when the mansion was constructed. None of this will help plan a wall system in an average home.
You'll get little or no help with BUILDING or DESIGNING a wall systems in an average home. The focus is on the pretty photos, the text is simply fill-in. No plans. No non-obvious design hints.

Jacob Marley, born Jacob Turner, lives in bourgeois comfort with his handicapped twin brother, Ezra, until the age of nine, when their father, a small farmer threatened with debtor's prison, shoots himself. Soon afterwards, their mother dies, and the boys end up slaving in a coal mine called Elizabeth's Furnace. At 13, Jacob is framed for the murder of the odious mine foreman. Thrown into prison, he is finally rescued seven years later, in 1796, by cardsharp Bill Worthy. A paradoxical figure, Worthy is a scoundrel with a heart of gold, who takes Jacob under his wing and gives him his new name. The two become partners and gradually turn their illicit dealings into a legitimate, successful business. Since guilt-ridden Marley believes Ezra died without his protection, his capacity for affection withers. Only one person elicits some kindness from himAhis clerk, the young Ebenezer Scrooge. Unfortunately, Scrooge's own emotional life is desiccated both by his association with Marley and the death during childbirth of his beloved sister, Fan. In Marley's Ghost, Mark Osmun has written a brilliant "prequel" to Charles Dickens' classic "A Christmas Carol". Here is the story of Jacob Marley whose ghost appeared to Ebenezer Scrooge to announce the coming of three spirits that legendary Christmas Eve. Jacob was a fugitive, prodigy, gambler, miner, mentor, corruptor and Ebenezer's partner in exploiting the vulnerable, the unwary, and the needy. Jacob was himself both victim and villain, capable of nobility and vile behavior. After his death Jacob wanders a frozen hell seeking answers and redemption. There he becomes a pawn in the battle between Light and Dark, ultimately compelled to choose between God and the Devil as the future of all human kind hangs in the balance. Marley's Ghost is a compelling, superbly crafted, original novel that does full justice to Dickens and is a memorable testament which may well become a classic itself!

Provacative

Mark Osmun's great imagination has taken us behind the scenes of a story we have read or watched on television annually since we were kids. Even with our familiarity with the story we knew virtually nothing about Jacob Marley, without whom The Christmas Carol would never have been written. Five stars for cleverness alone. To his credit, Osmun chose not to imitate the Dicken's style yet he put coal dust in my teeth together with a clostrophobic shortness of breath as I read through Marley's experience. Marley's journey is a wonderful metaphor for the journey we all travel as we ask questions about good and evil and our relationships with God and our fellow man. Marley's quest to save Scrooge is a journey of love from a man who has known everything but love. "When the time comes - How will you choose?"

I greatly enjoyed this book. Not too in depth about the history of advertising the author provides background as to the sea change moments over 100 years of industry. Also reads fast and well paced.

Very impressive history of an interesting side effect of our information age

We often refer to our civilization as the information age. Maybe a slightly more descriptive metaphor would be our advertising sponsored “free” information age. Tim Wu does an outstanding job of mapping out the history leading to this “free” information age. He starts a long time ago when Benjamin Day started a newspaper in New York City in the 1830s based on a revolutionary model at the time of being funded primarily by print advertising. Unlike his competitors, he sold his daily at a big loss. But, he more than made up for it by advertising. He started the business by creating unsolicited ads in his newspaper to trigger the interest of the merchants he had advertised on their behalf without their asking. Tim Wu goes on meticulously on detailing a succession of pioneers that will essentially leverage derivatives of this pioneering advertising sponsored business model onto radio, TV, internet, and ultimately mobile. By the end the advertising merchants have created trading networks that make hedge fund nanotraders seem like boy scouts on bicycles. Indeed, such advertising networks make so many near instant decisions to route whatever the most relevant ad is delivered to the highest commercial bidder on monitor and screens of all sizes.

At almost any time there is a tension or trade-off between getting wonderful information services for much below cost or entirely free and essentially suffering from advertising pollution that impairs our brain’s focus to achieve what we were meant to do on this earth.

Tim Wu feels the above issue has reached a boiling point. He is not alone. Even technology industry leaders have taken that position. In one of the last chapters, he focuses on Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, who championed this position. He indicated that the advertising invasion is really impairing customer experiences including underperformance (in terms of speed, video-streaming quality, etc.) of all related information appliances when surfing the internet. Along those lines Tim Cook delivered ad-blockers that are readily available on all Apple’s devices.

Tim Cook’s position is both laudable and self-serving (and not necessarily in a bad way, but a smart way). When you think of the four major behemoths of the technology field: Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Apple; they increasingly overlap and compete with each other over various domains be it cell phones, cloud servers, operating systems, and numerous other software platforms. But, when you look at the funding sources the first two (Google and Facebook) are essentially dominant advertising agencies. Meanwhile, Amazon is the major retail clearinghouse middleman who also benefits a great deal from advertising. On the other hand, Apple is from a funding source standpoint in a silo earning a buck the old fashion way by selling mainly hardware (I Phones, I Pads, I Watch) and services (music, apps). It does not make money from advertising. So, for Tim Cook to lead and facilitate the campaign of the ad-blockers is a direct arrow at the advertising based business of his main competitors.

In the last chapter, Tim Wu goes on that we should regain our consciousness and our focus. We should think more deliberately about the choice we make. Do we want to keep on selling ourselves for “free” to be part of massive audiences that are very lucratively marketable by the Big 3 (Facebook, Google, Amazon)? I have recently experienced what it is like. I just recently got a mini I Pad, a really cool little machine. And, I remember attempting to read a serious article that demanded focus in order to be understood. The mini I Pad screen is plenty big for reading. However, it seems that nearly three fourth of the screen was wasted on ads in various forms. And, I literally could not practice the type of slow attentive reading I needed to understand the article. I quickly gave up and read the article a few days later on a printed copy with no problem and a lot more enjoyment and retention. So, I should consider the ad-blocker apps as many of you have already. And, Tim Wu’s nearly spiritual call at the end does promote such attitude. Let’s reclaim the independence of our brain. Let’s focus. Let’s maximize the outcome of our respective destinies.

Tim Wu’s position is really attractive and nearly unquestionable. Could one really take the opposite position? Let’s waste our time being distracted by an unending stream of advertisement and related vapid entertainment and distraction and don’t leave a legacy whatsoever of our passage on earth. Ok, that’s not a very good rebuttal of Tim Wu’s position.

However, if we look at the underlying economics the underlying argument may get more complicated. Let’s say the Big 3 entirely loose out their ad revenues. And, they do not make enough from selling various apps and games to cover their costs. They actually would have to charge for their “free services.” They could use different models such as monthly subscriptions or paying for each unit of services. Given that, how much would you be willing to pay monthly to maintain access to your Facebook profile and its related networking activities? How much would you be willing to pay for one single Google search? Similarly, how much would Facebook and Google have to charge to effectively cover their lost advertising revenues? Those questions become a chicken and the egg issue because the price affects the demand. For “free” those services have nearly infinite demand. But, for any realistic price the demand for all those “free” services would crater. Such economic questions most often render problems or issues much more complicated than otherwise. This economic conundrum was not Tim Wu’s objective when writing “The Attention Merchants.” And, that is perfectly fine. His book probably packs in a more effective punch by focusing on the tension between “The Attention Merchants” and the self-actualization of our own focused consciousness.
