Different.

This is my first time reading this and it was not at all what I expected!! The story is about 2 police officers who stumble upon an age old secret that is intent on keeping it a secret any way they can!! Initially I thought this was about the typical werewolves but it's not and I think because I went into this having not read the blurb nor any reviews, is why I ended up enjoying it so much.

Anyway, this is a well written (for it's time) and entertaining story. I loved how it was told from the Police officers and the Wolfen's POV. It was eerie being inside their heads! It is also quite a gorey book but I've read worse! If you want a unique werewolf read and one that will keep your attention throughout, then this is one you should try.

Robert Fass was really good. He nailed the tenseness of certain situations and had me biting my nails waiting to see what happened!

WOLFEN is a great book, plain and simple

WOLFEN is a great book, plain and simple. I've reviewed it for my blog The World According To Quinn and I'll plug in the most relevant points here for your perusal:

One of the more innovative things Strieber does with his characters is that he has them realize they're being hunted--by creatures that aren't human no less--and take precautions. Instead of wandering around getting into danger like typical horror protagonists, they're proactive and their enemies are forced to react to them rather than the other way around. We end up with this giant cat-and-mouse game across 1970s New York City and it's cool.

Although there could be more showing and not telling (this was Strieber's first novel, so I'll be forgiving), it does paint a vivid picture of New York City in the 1970s, complete with a lot of the issues the police department was having (introducing female officers, cops taking payoffs from gambling rings) at the time.

Strieber's predatory antagonists are also really creative. Not only do they provide an inspiration for the myth of werewolves, but (not going into detail how), they provide an inspiration for the myth of vampires as well.

My main issue is that some characters end up in a love triangle partway through the book and, consequently, somebody has to die. Strieber reveals some stuff about the character once we get into this to make it more palatable, revelations that I didn't think were adequately foreshadowed.

Still, it's a great book and given the ending, it's a pity there wasn't a sequel. Enjoy!

In the first book to probe the origins of this ongoing social crisis, Peter C. Mancall explores the liquor trade's devastating impact on the Indian communities of colonial America. The author follows the trail of rum from the West Indian producers to the colonial distributors and on to the Indian consumers in the eastern woodlands. To discover why Indians participated in the trade and why they experienced such a powerful desire for alcohol, he addresses current medical views on alcoholism and reexamines the colonial era as a time when Indians were forming new strategies for survival in a world that had been radically changed. Finally, Mancall compares Indian drinking in New France and New Spain with that in the British colonies. Forever shattering the stereotype of the drunken Indian, Mancall offers a powerful indictment of English participation in the liquor trade and a new awareness of the trade's tragic cost for the American Indians.

A Sober, Somber Story

Despite the subject, or actually because of it, this is a very sober look at early American history. Most accounts of Indian-European relations note the liquor trade's deleterious effects on indigenous societies. Mancall has finally foregrounded the topic and the issues it raises, and the picture is disturbing and tragic. For centuries observers have debated the physiological aspects of Indian vulnerability to alcohol. But there is no doubt that combined with land loss, warfare, devastating disease epidemics and ongoing assaults on their cultures, Indians have suffered greatly from strong spirits pushed at them by Europeans. Liquor was just one commodity snaring Indians in networks of mercantile capitalism, but unlike firearms or manufactured goods, it had no redeeming values. Along with destroying Indian bodies, alcohol clouded judgement, leading to sale of irreplaceable lands and promoting the destructive fur and deerskin trades. It weakened military and political resistance to the continuous onslaught against Native Americans. Numerous revivalist and millenarian religious movements developed in response to alcohol abuse, some of which still endure. Mancall's study is strongly based on primary sources while using social-science perspectives to interpret the data. Though the book ends around 1800, the patterns described still operate today.

About the Author
Salim Bachi (b. 1971) is one of the most remarkable new voices of North Africa writing in French. He was born in Algeria and studied literature in Paris and now lives in France. About the Author
Gerald Graff, a professor of English and education at the University of Illinois at Chicago and 2008 president of the Modern Language Association of America, has had a major impact on teachers through such books as Professing Literature: An Institutional History, Beyond the Culture Wars: How Teaching the Conflicts Can Revitalize American Education, and Clueless in Academe: How Schooling Obscures the Life of the Mind.

Cathy Birkenstein is a lecturer in English at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has published essays on writing in College English, and, with Gerald Graff in The Chronicle of Higher Education, Academe, and College Composition and Communication.

Russel Durst, who edited the readings in "They Say / I Say" with Readings, is head of the English Department at the University of Cincinnati, where he teaches courses in composition, writing pedagogy and research, English linguistics, and the Hebrew bible as literature. A past president of the National Conference on Research in Language and Literacy, he is the author of several books, including Collision Course: Conflict, Negotiation, and Learning in College Composition.

Excellent book, good price

I teach composition/rhetoric at a two-year college and I have required the previous (second) edition of this book for a couple years.

I chose this text initially because, unlike a lot of composition texts, the writing voice in TS/IS is very personable, easy to follow, and unpretentious. It occasionally shows a nerdy sense of humor which, surprisingly, my students don't seem to mind.

The book addresses issues that I wish I had been taught as an undergrad, like "saying why it matters," or even the concept of "they say/I say" itself, which looks at how to take empty, boring writing, and put it in context so readers are interested in it. Instead of lecturing about the same tired old essay structure, the book approaches the task like a personal quest: make yourself clear, be interesting, and have integrity as a writer. Anything it omits or only touches on, like MLA style or research tips, can easily be supplemented.

The publisher's price on the second edition (without the readings, many of which can be found online anyway) remains an affordable $25. And I was pleased to see this new third edition also at $25 (on the Norton site, anyway). The price allows me to pair this required text with another inexpensive book on style to capture the more technical side of writing.

My only disappointment is that while TS/IS is FINALLY available as an e-book in the new third edition, it is limited in platform, and comes with this disclaimer: "Our eBooks are Flash based and will not work on the iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, and some Android devices."

So... my students can buy the cheaper e-book for only $15, but they can't view them on the majority of personal devices, which chips away a little at the advantages of the e-book in the first place.

Overall, though, the quality of the advice, content, and style in this book are still better than most texts I've worked with, so I will stick with it for the new year.

Fantastic approach to teaching persuasive writing

I received this book too late to use it for my persuasive writing class. While I had moderate success with my other book, Everything's an Argument, I would certainly use this book if I had to do it all over again.

They Say/I Say is a short book with a simple premise -- it correctly states that no argument occurs in a vacuum, but must depend upon what others have to say about it. Moreover, the authors believe one of the principle difficulties which students have with persuasive writing is an inability to correctly utilize these necessary ingredients (introduce what others have to say on the subject, and then present their own voice on the matter). Though I am not a writing teacher, I have found this to be the case in my classes.

TSIS summarizes the important aspects of this conversation in persuasive writing and provides templates for students to summarize what others say, introduce their own points, and perform various other techniques. While one may think the use of such templates leads to formulaic writing, the authors suggest the opposite is the case. By understanding how to shape their ideas, students can learn to better express their orginal thoughts, thus making their writing more individual.

While I am inclined to agree, TSIS is not perfect. It certainly cannot be used as a thorough textbook on all persuasive writing, nor am I completely convinced that the exercises provided in the book are the most effective at using the templates in student writing. If teachers can get students to incorporate the ideas of TSIS into student's writing, however, they will accomplish much. Check it out for yourself.

My Ivy League mentor impressed by improvements I made using tips from this book

I am in a Ph.D. program at Cornell University, but having already completed an undergrad and a Master's degree, I thought my writing was pretty good. However, after using the tips from this book, my Ivy League professor told me my work had substantially improved. I absolutely recommend this book to anyone looking to improve their writing. I also recommend "Making Sense in the Life Sciences: A Student's Guide to Writing and Research" for anyone looking to help organize lots of information into a logical flow/argument.

It Really Got Me Thinking

Finally! A book about karmic astrology that attempts to provide documentation! This is rare. Most books on karmic astrology are based on conjecture, and nothing else. But this one actually uses past-life regressions to back up the theories put forth in the book. It caused me to look with new eyes on my own natal chart, and those of my family and friends. Definitely the ideas in the book increased my understanding of everyone. In my humble opinion, this is the best karmic astrology book on the market, and highly recommended! Enjoy it!

Learning about Past Lives

I've always been curious to know about my own past lives, but living where I live it's difficult if not impossible to find someone who can help me. This book really helped. Ms. Devlin claims to have done ten years of research with past life regression and astrology, and her theories certainly seem to work for me. She wrote that someone with the aspects in my chart must have been either an actor or a king - and I have been fascinated by both for most of my life. I recommend this book highly.

Really Good

I will use this book. It has some great information! It answered a few nagging questions I had about my life, but she was vague in certain area's I would of liked more information. It left me wanting more. I was not crazy about how she kept going on and on about other people and their Karmic issues. All though they were fascinating stories I would of preferred she filled up the paper with more relevant information that would help me and those I read for. Examples are great but only to a point. A great beginning book in to the world of Past life Astrology. I recommend this book if your new to the subject.
