Before the Bastards Grind You Down

Damon Knight's _Rule Golden and Other Stories (1979) is a collection of five excellent novellas from the fifties that were dealing with "the great unsolved problem of politics: how to keep the bastards from grinding you down" (1). The stories are: "Rule Golden" (_Science Fiction Adventures_, 1954), "Natural State" (_Galaxy_, 1953), "Double Meaning" (_Startling_, 1952), "The Earth Quarter" (_If_, 1955), and "The Dying Man" (aka "Dio," _Infinity_, 1957). Two of the novellas were expanded into novels. "Double Meaning" was expanded as _The Rithian Terror_ (1965), and "The Earth Quarter" was expanded as __The Sun Saboteurs_ (1961). I believe that the original novellas were a bit more tightly written than their expanded versions, though there was little difference in their plots.
The first story is about the alien that emits a gas that forces us to obey the Golden Rule: If you kill someone, you will drop dead. If you hurt someone, you will suffer the same injury. Would this be effective with modern suicide bombers? My first thought was to say "no". But perhaps, over the long haul, it might. At the conclusion of the story, the earthmen conclude that they have become "more human".
In "Natural State," it is the technology of biology developed in the country that brings the stagnant cities to their knees. Knight has a lot of fun with the details of his biological tools, weapons, and food. And he also has great fun with his comical characters.
"Double Meaning" is about a shape-changing alien who escapes onto Earth. The man in charge of catching him is Thorne Spangler-- handsome, intelligent, ruthless, upwardly mobile, and very much a product of his humorless, computerized society. He does not understand that what makes the alien _really_ dangerous is that it has a sense of humor. It is up to the diminutive colonist, Jawj Pembrun, to outsmart the terror. Knight says that Jawj is one of his favorite characters.
"The Earth Quarter" was written as a rebuttal to the Campbellian story that assumed that mankind was the highest form of life in the galaxy. The Quarter is the section of an alien city, where Earthmen have been segregated by aliens until they are mature enough for space. The story dramatizes how mankind fails its last chance. The villain of the story, Lawrence Rack, was based, Knight says, on "the hero of a story by L. Ron Hubbard, 'To the stars'" (3). "The Earth Quarter" is the most downbeat story in the collection.
"The Dying Man" is set in a near-utopian society of the future, populated by a race of immortals. Then one day, a man, Dio, is injured. He discovers that he is dying. Ironically, he begins to discover for the first time how to live. When he says a final good-bye to his lover, we feel a pang of recognition: "You see, you're a goddess. An immortal goddess-- and I'm a man" (391). Knight says that this story is more mythical and less political than the other stories in this collection.
Knight does not always do well with full-length novels. But it is certainly hard to fault him with these novellas. They are artfully written, and they provoke thought.

Rule Golden was WONDERFUL!

Damon Knight is an extremely talented author. Rule Golden (a story about an Alien who imposes a reverse golden rule on humans, "Be done by as you do.") is an excellent example of his writing. I can't imagine that the things that have happened since this story was written (as the only other reviewer maintains) could take the edge off this story. No aliens have landed, have they? People are still perfectly willing to kill others, aren't they? Perhaps he doesn't like the morality of it, but that's rather like saying that the bible or the writings of Buddha are out of date.
