Great Naval Blunders: History's Worst Sea Battle Decisions from Ancient Times to the Present Day, by Geoffrey Regan

From the Admiral Popov, the circular Russian battleship that wouldn't steer straight, to the HMS Trinidad, a British cruiser that managed to torpedo itself, this copiously illustrated collection of incompetence on the high seas takes a serious if often entertaining look at the misjudgments of captains, fleet commanders, and ship designers from Roman times to the present day. Full of jaw-dropping anecdotes, Great Naval Blunders proves the old adage, "Worse things happen at sea."

Tales Told By a Sailor in a Bar
By Gray M. Pedersen
Reading Geoffrey Regan's book, "Great Naval Blunders," is a lot like listening to a sailor spinning entertaining but questionable stories in a bar. Regan never tells us the whole story, skipping crucial details and avoiding explanations that might require him to be more precise and clear. Certainly his choice of anecdotes is impressive, and range all over the world, from "circular" Russian warships to the exploits of Brazilian navies making their timid way upriver against defending Paraguans. The stories are also plentiful, if short and lacking in much-needed information; the reader can forget wondering about what was obviously left out of the story and happily jump ahead to the next one. For example, Regan briefly describes one incredible exploit when, during World War I, British sailors in Africa hauled small naval vessels overland to Lake Tanganyika to fight German gunboats already in command of that strategic body of water. In Regan's telling, the British boats somehow just arrive, with apparent ease, at their destination, with no description or details about how such a challenging feat was managed.
The book, published by Andre Deutsch, is amazingly bereft of all sources, citations, and acknowledgements. There is not one indication, anywhere, of how the author acquired all of his tales. Like listening to a guy tell unconnected stories in a bar, it can be entertaining for a while, but you wonder how much you can really believe.

Great Read
By Chekk
This book is exactly what it says it is. I really enjoyed it. In it the author reminds us what other authors and historians routinely refuse or forget to do, and let us all know how incompetent the people in high places truly are, and how cavalier they are with human lives. Example 1 in this book is the British Admiralty, who we are always lead to believe over the centuries gave the world the finest navies-not so. We learn over and over of gross negligence and incompetence, and one name that comes up over and over is Churchill. Churchill was a moron according to the author, and if he is not, he is certainly overrated, and must have had a lot of sleepless nights, seeing the ghosts of all the men he was directly responsible for sending to their graves. Want to know how?? Check out the book. I found it to be a good quick read, and give it a strong five star rating.

A cornucopia of interesting stories.
By Michael P Roberts
I'm still reading as I write this review. I've enjoyed the reading so far. Some of the stories describe events that I am already familiar with while others are new to me. But even the events that I already knew about are described from a slightly different perspective, being viewed in terms of the blunders that they were rather than straightforward historical events.

It might be a personal thing, but I would have preferred the book to be written in chronological sequence as this would have made the cross references between certain characters and events easier to follow. I understand the way that the author divided the subject into the various chapters, but even within these the action leaps back and forward like a literary TARDIS.
